Franchise marketing continues to be a frustration for franchisors and franchisees alike. I went through a period of franchising a few years ago and during those years spoke to a lot of franchisees and franchisors from other networks to pick their brains on best practice (as franchising was new to me). It became very clear that a common bone of contention, both ways, often surrounded marketing. Franchisors wanted franchisees to be more proactive and self-sufficient, yet needed to charge a monthly marketing fee to support some central ongoing brand activity. Franchisees felt that the centralised marketing pot they were paying into wasn't delivering them enough results. They also didn't feel equipped well enough to carry out their own activity. This article explores this dichotomy and presents the only solution I can see to breaking this pattern.
