Can you believe it's been two weeks since International Men's Day? 😯 We can't either. Have you continued thinking about men's mental health, or has it all been forgotten now the day has passed? Obviously, we hope it's the former, but evidence seems to suggest that in most companies, it's the latter, like the majority of 'event' days. The fact is though, the problems haven't gone away. More than half of the men in your company are still likely to be struggling with stress, or worse. The theme of this year's International Mens Day was to focus on breaking down the stigma of talking about men's suicide and to provide support for men and their mental health. Being an L&D manager or leader in an organisation, you'll know more than most, that this can be tricky. Men do struggle, and getting them to admit it and seek help is a challenge. 📣 This week is Men's Mental Health Week (June 12-18), lets shine a light on the importance of mental health for all male figures around us ✔️1 in 8 men are battling common mental health issues like anxiety, stress, or depression (That's 4.1 million men in the UK!) ✔️Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 45, with 3 in 4 suicides being men. ✔️40% of men do not discuss their mental health struggles with friends or family. Men have often been conditioned to bear their burdens alone, with the misconception that discussing feelings detracts from their worth as a man. Stereotypical beliefs have been barriers to men opening up about their mental health struggles for years. But change is possible, and it starts with us: 👥 We can help by checking in with our friends - not just once, but twice. Sometimes, that second ask can make all the difference. 💙 Let's break the stigma by normalising conversations about mental health. Celebrities like Hugh Jackman Tyson Fury and Roman Kemp have already lead the way. 💼 At work, we can advocate for a balanced workload, regular health check-ups, and leadership that prioritises mental health. October 10th is World Mental Health Day! Situated perfectly in Mental Health Awareness month, today the World Health Organization asks us to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world. This year’s theme is “Mental health is a universal human right”. Today we want to improve knowledge, raise awareness, and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as human rights. Mental health is not something we should only talk about once a year, but something that we should always be aware of. 12th - 18th June signifies Mens Mental Health Week. Even though this week is to highlight it, it should NOT be forgotten throughout the year. Mental health manifests differently in both men and women. Research suggests 1 in 8 men in England suffer from a common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety etc, but even more men are more likely to die by suicide than women! There are social "norms" that have led men to face a self-stigma /social-stigma when it comes to expressing their emotions, as they are grown to be under the impression of simply "carrying on." The resistance around mental health and support for men stem from the "alpha" male notion. The stereotypes such as Toxic Masculinity which is a preconception of men acting ‘tough’ and not showing emotions can also have damaging consequences for men, and wider society. This can be changed...you are not alone and have someone to talk to! Everyone faces mental health issues of some sort and can relate to it. 💭Sharing our own stories/vulnerability can open doors to conversations of support. 💙 Reassuring someone that there is support. Create a safe space when speaking by doing an activity one may enjoy, as an example, building a relaxing environment to share feelings. When speaking with someone who is going through mental health issues, your language is everything! Support words can make a difference, which can boost their sense of belonging. Show support especially to someone who is seeking help. Accept that and redefine that! Seeking help is your strength!
