This year for mental health awareness day, we'll be talking about the importance of psychological safety alongside friends from across the industry. "If the last few years has taught us anything, it’s that empathy and compassion are key. This is especially true when considering our mental health and wellbeing, as we open up about our personal struggles to our loved ones and more commonly to colleagues. Which is a great indicator that our culture has positively shifted to a more inclusive and psychologically safer environment. Employers now have an opportunity to stand out by continually promoting the importance of wellbeing and ensuring it’s at the forefront of business best practices as is to prioritise our colleagues first. As human beings and allies, we can help make a change to remove the stigma surrounding ill mental health by continuing to openly talk to one another, regularly." 🤔 Ever felt the frustration of navigating your employer's health plan in search of mental health care options? You're not alone. 🌈 In my recent experience, I delved into the provider list on my insurance company's portal with high hopes. What followed was a maze of challenges - incorrect numbers, providers who never returned calls, and the dreaded "not accepting new patients" message. For those with availability, the earliest slot was weeks away. 🗓️ The irony? Quick access was available off-plan, but at a hefty cost - $150-$300 per hour. 💸 It got me thinking: are we missing a crucial link in employer health plans when it comes to mental health care? Sure, online options exist, but the impersonality of it can be a turn-off (at least for me). For many, the online world itself has contributed to the feelings of aloneness that have fueled our current mental health crisis. 🌐💔 As we explore ways to improve workplace well-being, let's address this gap in our health plans. How can we ensure that mental health care is not just a box to check, but a genuine, accessible support for employees? What solutions have you found or wish to see in this area? "The pandemic opened my eyes to the fragility of life. I realized I took for granted the privilege of my own time. I cannot live on someone else’s timeline or think I’ll be afforded the opportunity to speak on certain injustices at the end of my career. Psychological safety means we show up as our imperfect selves to share, collaborate, and learn without fear of reprisal or incivility. A culture of safety replaces ego with understanding. It’s what in part will drive a chosen return to the office. That may involve leaders coming to terms that the systems, behaviours, or salaries in place may no longer serve the reality of its current workforce.
