I am also raising awareness of people living with dementia and their carers.

I'm proud to share the publication of my first book - Pieces of Me (https://a.co/d/4z2VcNy) It is a collection of poems of returning home to myself from mental illness, trauma, heartbreak and the road to recovery. Please share it with others, so that it can make it into the hands of those that may need it. Those who need some help opening their eyes to see that they, too, are home and always have been. You aren't broken. You are right where you need to be in this very moment. You are home. "Pieces of Me is a collection of poetry and writings that come from experiencing disordered eating, sexual assault, trauma, mental illness, self-harm, depression, suicide, addiction, grief, heartbreak, transformation, relapse and recovery. Each piece speaks from a different part of myself that found their voice along the recovery journey. Life is about feeling all the emotions, regardless of how scary and uncomfortable they may be. No matter how hard we try to hide them, they will find a way of coming up. This book allowed all of the parts of me to say what they have been needing to say, without consequence. They kept me company on my long journey home. Contact her at [email protected]."

Having a mental illness is very lonely. Reaching out can also be difficult. Awareness of mental illness should be a part of schools' core curriculum: both recognising when we are becoming unwell ourselves and how to support others in accessing the help that they need. Learning the difference between asking intrusive/nosy questions and offering compassionate support could help reduce suffering at an early stage - possibly preempting future relapses - and further, help rebuild our fractured communities.

I have been treated for mh issues over my 62 years of life. In the 70’s and 80’s such matters were very rarely mentioned. Nowadays I believe it to be an invisible umbrella to mask all kind of non issues. My wife was a senior lecturer at various colleges in her time and when students didn’t turn up or hand in course work they cited mental health issues. My mother tried to commit suicde when I was younger. I have no doubt the pressure and stress on all of us can cause these problems. My freind who is a GP says he’s is asked to sign off more sick notes for mental heath issues than ever before. Let’s keep everything in the correct perspective. We all have our dark days at some time.
