I had the pleasure of being invited on CoinDesk's TV show this week at CONSENSUS. Really enjoyed the conversation with Jennifer Sanasie and Magdalena Kala where we talked about how Napster plans to disrupt the music industry with Web3. I talked about having a go at toppling Spotify with a better experience for artists and fans. It may seem crazy but we are going to give it a go. What we were building at the old Napster 20+ years ago but never launched is still better than what is available to fans today. There has been no real innovation since then but that is about to change. We are going to have artists and fans as partners in our ecosystem and we are going to put them first and reward fandom! Web3 is the perfect tech platform to allow our artist partners to connect directly with their fans opening up new channels for creativity, communication, and commerce. I hope this post inspires others in every industry to go up against the incumbents, to push for a better ecosystem than the ones we have today. It is tough being a change agent but without change there would be no innovation and we need innovation especially now. It is time to build a very different platform than the commodity music services of today; a place where artists can express themselves fully and be rewarded for their time and art; a place where fans can go deeper into the music they love, connecting with their favorite artists directly and with other fans who share their same love of music. We are going to give it our best shot to make music fun again. We don't like the push to shorter and shorter songs with the tiktokification that is happening in the industry. Music artists are the most creative humans alive and we want to give them their own platform to express themselves fully. We want to empower playlist makers from all walks of life and from all corners of the globe. We want to make them famous and give them a platform to share their amazing talent with other fans versus trying to monopolize creative playlist control centrally. We are independent. We are Napster. We are going to bring change to the business. We need the smartest people, the best investors, and the most innovative partners to get there. Muzos seeks to nestle into the ecosystem of established giants like Apple Music and has set sights on YouTube and Amazon Music. In the quest to champion budding artists, fresh strategies are always a welcomed sight. Is the gamification of music streaming a leap forward or detracting from the simple joy of discovering and immersing in music? Are platforms like Muzos indeed building a new stage or simply adding another layer to an already bustling marketplace? If you’ve got a great song, you’ve got great sync potential. 👉 ‘Success has many parents’ - the record-breaking ‘Running Up That Hill’ sync in Strangers Things 4 was a team effort. Impactful sync is the result of getting many ducks in a row. 👉 ‘The car that didn’t want to be sold’ - no matter how much a brand wants to use a song, rightsholders have the final say. You need to be thick-skinned to negotiate between both parties. 👉 Blanket licensing provides an all-you-can-eat buffet for broadcasters. If marketing teams can keep ahead of the curve, they can capitalise on a song’s attention with remix releases. 👉 There’s a lot of untapped potential for music in the gaming market and adaptive audio.
