What about equipment maintenance director?
LIGHT BLUE-COLLAR "I don't want to work a blue-collar job because I don't want to be fifty with a broken body." That's fair, neither do I. But consider this for a second. There's blue-collar and white-collar, and then there's "light-blue-collar." Those roles that support the field teams building the critical infrastructure we need to survive as a society. In many construction companies, there is a cost of entry into these roles. You need to serve your time in the field. But in any company worth working for, you can do this and start moving up the chain in a handful of years. (A dirty little secret? Most companies are hungry for up-and-coming leaders. They'll be desperate for them five years from now.) Here are just a few roles in the Dirt World that, at the right company, have great upward mobility, incredible benefits, healthy salaries and bonuses, and don't break your body. Here are just a few examples of light blue-collar roles: Project Engineer / Project Manager Skills: Leadership, organization, planning and scheduling, negotiation, documentation, in-depth construction knowledge. This role is often filled by veteran field folks but can be earned quickly at the right company. GPS Technician Skills: Technology, computer savvy, data, mechanically inclined These days, this is a critical role in many construction companies. Operations Manager Skills: Leadership, project management, developing teams, tracking production, forecasting Usually promoted from the field, this requires a new level of leadership. If you're a people person with a strong operations mind, this is perfect for you. HR/Recruiting Skills: Legal, documentation, soft skills, interviewing/hiring/onboarding, marketing, strategy These roles have been in demand for a while and are only becoming more valuable as the workforce problem increases. Marketing Skills: Storytelling, branding and graphic design, writing, media, strategy This is usually outsourced for companies with less than 100-ish team members, but I'm seeing FT marketers at many medium-sized contractors these days. Content Creator Skills: Photo, video, editing, branding, social media This is a newer, entry-level role I'm seeing, but more contractors are catching on to the value of a dedicated creator on staff. My friend Nic Parish is just one example. And I haven't mentioned the countless construction-adjacent businesses that hire light blue-collar roles that support the industry: My friend Jordan Hillstrom's team of developers builds apps for big contractors. Tylor Foster and team help contractors with GPS, modeling, and construction technology. Sheldon Zitzmann's company makes tough seat covers for the tough people of the Dirt World. Endless examples. If laying pipe, running a dozer, or digging holes isn't your thing, not to worry! The Dirt World has a place for you. Starting out opening a law firm and new business, it is likely (like me) you really don't have any idea what you are doing. Someone asked me the other day - "how do I decide which employee I should hire first if I am ready to hire someone?" Good question - probably a personal assistant/legal assistant who will help with phones and other routine office administrative work is my two cents. I have over 30 years of experience ranging from a retail environment to corporate level. I also have been assigned to recruitment companies as a temporary worker and it showed I am adaptable to any circumstance as needed. Unfortunately, my mother became ill so I had to become her carer for the past 10 years. Hence, the career diversion. Luckily we got through that and then covid hit so added on a few more years. An example of what I have achieved in my employment in the past is firstly nursing my mother back to health and with Saul Pension Trustees I implemented a new data/admin list sheet which helped both departments to facilitate reconciliations affectively and promote communication with the pension managers. This was written up in the new training manual. I have also created and maintained a database of clients for financial advisors and created a Stakeholder Pension folder pack with which I wrote and designed to update Financial Directors of companies on the database therefore creating new clients for the company. I am very versatile and adaptable and a team player. I am proficient in all aspects of administration and office skills. A good communicator on all levels. I am eager to re-enter the workforce! I will need to relocate or accommodation to be provided.
