🚨 In a recent study, Socure found that more than 50% of Gen Z and legal immigrants report difficulties verifying their identities online. Today we’re sharing our latest research on these segments of the population who we call “Digital Ghosts” – or those without enough of a financial footprint to pass identity verification checks required for accessing essential financial and government services. Digital Ghosts have little to no record of credit cards, loans, rental leases, home purchases, or mobile device plans, leaving them without the necessary credit bureau history and public records data to clear traditional identity verification systems. Here's the problem: Digital Ghosts can't easily establish the credit history demanded by conventional identity verification methods. How are scammers using fake IDs to fool outdated document verification systems? Our latest report draws insights from our experience verifying documents across various industries, highlighting key focus areas during the document verification process. The numbers speak for themselves: 📸 63% of the time, fraud occurred through document image-of-image, where a user takes a screenshot of a document to commit fraud rather than showing an ID in real time. 🪪 21% of the time we saw tampered headshots. 🤳20% of the time a fraudster spoofed a selfie by taking a photo of an image on a piece of paper or a someone else’s headshot. Organizations increasingly need to verify government documents online to verify age or identity. Our latest report shows the importance of using a multi-layered security approach involving advanced technology like AI, biometric analysis, and auxiliary signals to detect fraud.
