I've been talking about how the time is ripe to disrupt Slack for a while now, and it's interesting to see at least two new contenders popping up. I have my opinions about their products and the whole SaaS/Non-SaaS debate, but there's something more immediately relevant to adoption that I believe these new platforms are missing out on. Slack followed Google Docs and Gmail, as the second generation of apps you use at home, school, and work. An alternative to Slack must offer a free plan for user groups, open-source projects, students, and communities. To me, this makes me believe that Discord is the better positioned software to make a dent on Slack's dominance. Kids join the workforce with years of experience on Discord. It seemed like they were not super interested in the enterprise, but as they start prioritizing revenue, I wonder if this will change. And yes, as an elder millennial, I sometimes feel lost on Discord. (Why does everything blink? Why does it feel like a text-based game of pinball?) But every time that happens, I remember how GenXers felt as we were replacing Skype with Slack back in 2013…

Slack's Surprise Growth: Slack, the popular team communication platform, had a rather unexpected growth spurt in its early days. The platform was initially developed as an internal communication tool for a gaming company called Tiny Speck. However, they soon realized the potential of their creation and decided to launch it as a standalone product. When they released Slack publicly, they expected to have around 1,000 users in the first few months. To their surprise, within just a few hours of launching, thousands of sign-ups started pouring in. The unexpected demand forced them to scale their infrastructure to accommodate the influx of users quickly. This unexpected growth became a defining moment for Slack and set the stage for its subsequent success. #slack #success #team

When you're deciding between a Slack and a forum, imo, it's a question of objectives. Is your objective to capture and synthesize honest feedback from users to improve the product? Slack is a great way to create tight feedback loops and high-touch relationships. Or are you trying to facilitate knowledge transfer between users at scale? Forums are great for improving information accessibility. Regardless of how you spend your resources, align your broader DevRel and GTM strategy with the strategic value of either option!
After several years of the almost-obligatory Slack group to go with any new company or community, interesting to see PostHog not just opening up a forum instead but actually closing their Slack: #communitymanagement #devrel

Let’s be honest, Slack is currently dominating the instant-messaging app industry. But did you know that it was actually born out of the gaming company? It’s the year 2012; Daniel Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Slack, crafted the company Tiny Speck, which eventually produced the game, Glitch. Butterfield and his team didn’t intentionally set out to create a SaaS (software as a service) product for the workplace. In other words, Glitch was a game for their personal use. Little did they know that by 2014, Tiny Speck's failure would pave the path for a $16 billion dollar business utilized by many people around the world. Slack is a communication-centered platform designed by Slack Technologies and owned by Salesforce, an American cloud-based software company. Although Slack was developed for professional businesses and organizations, it has also been adopted as a community platform. From voice and video calls, texts, and their AI feature, Slackbot, users have a wide range of features to explore to navigate virtual messaging with ease and enjoyment.

The Slack content you didn't know you needed 👇 This time last week I co-hosted a virtual Slack Community Meetup with Tanya Anglin & Laurence Fitch. The theme for the session was 'simple but effective' where we highlighted the value Slack can bring without needing to code or develop anything. We covered A LOT of ground but to sum it up we showed: ⏺ How you can setup Slack for yourself (Preferences, Sections, App & To-Dos) ⏺ How you can setup Slack for your teams (Channel taxonomy, Onboarding new employees and team members) ⏺ How you can work more productively in Slack (Using Workflows and Canvas to automate approvals, share information and open requests) The clip below shows some of the key content in the session. Huge shoutout to everyone involved, can't wait to bring more of this energy into next year! #slack #slackcommunity #productivity

Every open-source founder/maintainer faces the same decision: 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱. It is usually where your audience is. From what I talked to founders and personal use. 1. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 - Discord. 2. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲/𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - Slack. But I feel most people will migrate to Discord over the years. I think the main reason is that Discord's free tier is better than Slack's free tier. Slack's free tier has a limited amount of message history - that's a problem because you lose all your support tickets from the past, which means you need to answer the same question repeatedly. Also, Slack's cheapest plan costs $7.25 per person per month. So, a community like Novu has more than 3000 people inside. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 $𝟮𝟭,𝟳𝟱𝟬 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸. How much does it cost in Discord? Nada. I also see a shift in moving the team to Discord. I still see people having Slack for internal stuff and Discord for the community. There's no reason for that. Discord works great with permission and fits the "core" area. It removes the necessary channels and lets you efficiently delegate between public tickets to the core area.
