Let’s talk about ✨AI deception!✨ HOT new paper from Dr. Peter S. Park, Michael Chen and friends outlining ways AIs could mislead users - like by playing dumb to avoid detection, bluffing, or strategic social manipulation. In empirical studies, AIs engaged in premeditated lying, advanced persuasion techniques, and providing complex reasoning to support bogus claims. AI models are social players now, and we better not be naive. All eyes are on the 2024 election, where a lot of people may want to change others’ minds. I got to provide feedback on an early draft of “AI Deception: A Survey of Examples, Risks, and Potential Solutions” and am so excited to see the final. 🤩🎉

Without deliberate intervention, the well-known biases that exist within #AI systems can perpetuate major social inequities in healthcare, home ownership, law enforcement, hiring, and more. But by understanding and recognizing AI’s inclination toward biases, leaders can develop tools and processes to advance value-neutral data and mitigate societal harm.
