Victim-blaming is any comment or behavior that communicates to a survivor of sexual assault that they are responsible for the occurrence in some way. Participating in victim-blaming also contributes to the issue at large. So, what can you do to help? Common phrases you should avoid that communicate blame for the victim: “Didn’t you know better?” “Well, what were you wearing?” “You know them, so why didn’t you just say, ‘stop’?” “Why didn’t you run away?” “So, you didn’t even try to get help?” “Were you under the influence?” And the worst: “Why can’t you let go?” Instead of saying any of the phrases listed above, use phrases like these: “I’m so sorry that this has happened to you.” “I believe you.” “I know this is hard to talk about. I’m listening.” “I can’t imagine how hard this is for you.” “I’m willing to be here with you through it all.” “Everything you feel about this situation is valid.” Speaking in ways that affirm a survivor’s feelings, and communicating that you believe and support them, goes a long way into their recovery from the traumatic event. So important we take a stand on Bullying. Let us create a culture where everyone, young and experienced, feels safe to be themselves. Today on Pink Shirt Day, this change begins with each of us. I just started reading Jen Fraser, PhD book on The Bullied Brain. We can find different ways forward. In what ways can each of us create environments where everyone feels safe and there is no bullying or incivility? This is so true from The Bullied Brain - "If we let scientific study of the brain guide us, we have a chance to exit the bullying paradigm and enter into a new neuroparadigm. If we let children be our teachers, we can return to a more natural state of empathy, creativity and care. " This begins by speaking up. Not being the silent bystander. Together, we can make a difference. What is the one thing you can do? Sharing a photo from a few years ago on the CST Project on "Pink Shirt Day". #pinkshirtday #bullyingprevention #incivility #bullying

Research shows that one out of every five students in the nation reports being bullied. The impact is even more widespread when you consider the number of students who witness the bullying behavior and, yes, the child or teen with the bullying behavior. Joining us is Judy French with PACER Center's National Bullying Prevention Center for “Bullying Behavior 101." We’ll discuss the dynamics of bullying and how their experiences in school, neighborhood, and home can be contributing factors. When it comes to bullying behaviors -- if we don’t understand the cause, it can be difficult to prevent it from happening again. Register: https://ow.ly/6OeZ50PQRm6?
