~2,000 BC the first open air markets annoyed us with the carnival barking sales pitches from grabby merchants. Some other stuff happened for a couple thousand years (please fill in the blanks in the comments) In the early 1900s commercial aviation and the automobile brought a wave of traveling salesmen. Then in 1928 bulk mail service started delivering masses of junk-mail. In the 1950 suburbs brought the door to door salesman with the latest annoying cold outreach. In the 1970s telemarketing started interrupting our dinners with the promise of cheaper long distance calls. In the 1990s pop up ads bombarded us. In the early 2000s email marketing exploded with a whole new wave of poorly conceived and targeted marketing. Unfortunately AI will make all of the previous waves of stupid marketing look quaint. It will also help facilitate some really well done marketing, but will excel at mass producing the most common and least effective messaging in front of everyone on every channel at all times. I hate barriers to entry, but the best argument for a barrier to entry is to prevent overuse. And good news, the more crappy marketing is out there the easier it should be for an average marketer to look amazing, so put in the effort.
