Last week, I had the opportunity to spend the day volunteering with Defy Ventures for their Entrepreneur in Training Program. Along with about 30 other volunteers, I spent the day coaching incarcerated people on their resumes and business plans to prepare them for employment and entrepreneurship post-release. I was not prepared for how inspired - and humbled - I would be by the experience. I was also surprised by how much I learned - both from the Defy team and from the participants in the program, who showed incredible resilience and commitment to growth.
I highly recommend the program to anyone looking for an impactful volunteering experience. It would also be a great experience for teams to do together, especially teams that have experience giving feedback on resumes (I'm looking at you, recruiters!).
If you're in a position to influence hiring policies at your organization, it's also worth reviewing your company's policies on hiring the formerly incarcerated and advocating for change if there's a firm policy against it. There are so many talented, eager, growth-minded people who may have made bad decisions at some point but have done the work to take accountability for their actions and change their mindset, and are just waiting for someone to give them a second chance.

Team work makes the dream work! We’re not just dreaming of how we help people build wealth and create financial well-being. We are teaming to find ways to make greater societal impact and help people make the most of all they’ve been given. Team DMV believes it’s “we” over “me”. Why? Because there is no “I” in team. #PowerInPartnership#WeAreBetterTogether

My brackets often involve determining whether a Golden Eagle could beat a Wolf Pack. What is a sure thing is that March Madness is a great way for companies to build or reinforce camaraderie and positive culture. #companyculture#generations#productivity#decisionmaking
"It takes a village to raise a child", so is a Venture. A venture can be the brain child of an individual but it takes the efforts and dedication of the entire Functional and non-functional workforce behind it to make it Sit, Crawl, Stand, Walk and finally Run.
