The problem with communities is that the organizers think its members are "superfans". This belief is prevalent in both web2 and web3, but especially in web3. Organizers see no reason why the members shouldn't be used to pump products for the brand. Everyone wins if the product catches fire in the marketplace is the logic. But what happens if the product doesn't catch fire? What happens if things don't go swimmingly? What happens if the founders are accused of stealing money from the till at some point? In all of these scenarios, the community loses. How so? Because if you're a member of said community and have been part of the cheerleading squad, guess who is to blame if the product tanks? If all of that sounds disastrous, you're right. Because it's not what community is about. Yet, most marketers, especially in web3, are proclaiming this model to be the future of brands, products, and communities. Ewwwboy. The problem with such a framing is that it confuses sales with community. Communities are not unpaid salespeople. They do not exist to sell products for the brand. They are communities. And communities are about members empowering other members to elevate in both life and career. Communities build together. They laugh together. They cry together. They fail together. They rise together. They are also in service to the greater good of society, beyond the community itself. That's sort of the point of communities. We've been doing them this way since the dawn of time. (Or at least, the best among us have tried.) In any case, communities should strive to evolve beyond the sum of their parts, or they're not fit to be called communities. But it's hard to do that when you're using your community to pump products and you view your members as "superfans". So how do communities become self-sufficient? By enriching the members individually through education, inspiration, and shared humanity. Wealth generation is a byproduct of that. I'll talk more about that next time. Brand New Voices

💁♀️ 🙋♂️ Meet Emily and David, both passionate basketball fans who recently attended a live match. 🏀⛹🏻♂️ 🌟 Emily bought her tickets weeks ago online. After receiving an email with her seating preference and details already prefilled, it took only a couple of clicks from her inbox to secure tickets. 🌟 David found out about the game a week before after overhearing a conversation at work. Twenty minutes of online searching and navigating a clunky ticketing website later, he managed to scrape one of the last few remaining tickets. 🌟 The day before the match, Emily received a notification via her fan engagement app advising of the best transport options to get to the match, and a map of the arena showing which gate she needed to enter, along with suggested timings to ensure she arrived before tip-off. 🌟 David got to his seat two minutes into the first quarter, after battling trains, buses, and crowds before having to walk all the way around the other side of the arena to enter via his allocated gate. 🌟 During the match, Emily received notifications via her trusty app to advise of the available food and beverage outlets and toilets closest to her seat, including live updates on queue wait times. 🌟 David spent 10 minutes looking for his favourite food outlet, then another 15 minutes waiting in line for a hotdog and coke. He missed most of the third quarter. 🌟 Connected to the free and fast arena Wi-Fi, Emily received real-time statistics and player performance metrics via the app as she cheered on her team. This enhanced her understanding of the strategies unfolding on the court and deepened her connection to the sport. 🌟 On the other hand, David was trying to keep up with game stats on scoreboards and screens, but the hooligan fans infront kept blocking his view with their giant flags and cardboard cutouts. His mobile data was not able to refresh fast enough to follow along online due to the high volume of network traffic. ✅ The power of data analytics can be harnessed to create exceptional fan experiences. By leveraging advanced technologies and providing accurate, real-time insights, we can empower fans like Emily to develop a deeper appreciation for the sport and enhance their engagement. 💡 To do this requires investment in robust data infrastructure, and ensuring the seamless integration of analytics into various touchpoints throughout the fan journey. How do you turn your audience into a community contributing to growth? Earlier this week, I shared the masterclass pulled off by a bunch of 20-year-olds to bring 60,000 people on-site and 1.3M people on Twitch for their event 🚀 (Check the earlier post in the comments section below 👇) How did they make that happen? Knowingly or not, they used the 5Cs of community-building 🗣️ CONTENT By extending the reach of their event to 24 virtual content creators and making it mandatory for them to go through training and certification to participate, the organizers ensured that hundreds of hours of content were created (for free) across various universes and communities before the event itself. 🌟 CURATION This is about providing even more value and relevance than what the community originally came for. And boy, did they deliver. On top of the promised event, surprise guests on D-Day included famous rappers, musicians, actors, and internet celebrities, all loved by the target audience. 🤝 COLLABORATION Communities across the board were heavily involved in the making of the event by co-creating merchandising and sharing their wish list in terms of online and offline activations. Having community members have "skin in the game" massively increased the virality of the event. 👥 CLOSENESS This is all about multiplying the number of relevant touchpoints. All virtual creators involved ran multiple live Twitch sessions with their communities, focused on answering questions, unveiling their car and equipment, merch, etc. Another best practice in community involvement and engagement. 🫂 CARE Organizers operated with authenticity and empathy. One example: although they could clearly have profited more, the ticket for the on-site event was capped at 48€, an accessible price for a full day of entertainment. In addition, tickets were named, making it impossible for speculators to inflate their prices on the secondary market.
