Lack of Native Human Population: Unlike other continents, Antarctica has no indigenous human population. The only inhabitants are scientists and researchers temporarily stationed at research stations. 2. Unique Wildlife: Despite its harsh conditions, Antarctica is home to various wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales, and a diverse range of seabirds. Emperor penguins are the largest and most iconic penguin species found on the continent. 3. Treaty for Peaceful Purposes: The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959, designates Antarctica as a zone for peaceful scientific research and prohibits military activity, nuclear testing, and mineral resource exploitation. It has been signed by multiple countries and sets the stage for international cooperation in the region. 4. Continental Drift: The landmass of Antarctica was once part of a larger supercontinent known as Gondwana. Over millions of years, it drifted to its current location, resulting in its isolated and polar environment. 5. Antarctic Desert: Despite its icy appearance, Antarctica is considered a desert because it receives very little precipitation. The interior of the continent receives an average of only about 2 inches (50 millimeters) of precipitation per year. Underwater butterfly 💦 🦋 🐌 - So many amazing finds during our exploration dive to search for new benthic marine species in Mauritius. - One fascinating creature that caught our attention was the Cyerce nigricans, commonly known as the Black Sea Slug. - This unique marine gastropod is a true underwater butterfly, gracefully gliding through the ocean currents. With its striking black coloration, it stands out against the vibrant backdrop of coral reefs. The Cyerce nigricans possesses a soft, elongated body and feathery appendages that resemble delicate butterfly wings. These appendages, called cerata, play a crucial role in the slug's defense mechanism, as they contain toxic compounds to deter potential predators. Despite its small size, the Cyerce nigricans is a remarkable example of nature's creativity and adaptability in the underwater world. Join the Quest: Volunteers Needed for Loch Ness Monster Expedition Starting in August For generations, the Loch Ness monster, a legendary being said to dwell in Scotland's Loch Ness, has remained a riddle shrouded in time. Known as Nessie, this creature's origins trace back to alleged sightings as early as the 6th century, predating the arrival of Viking warriors on British shores. From fading into local folklore to reemerging through unverified photos resembling prehistoric creatures in the 20th century, the Loch Ness monster's existence continues to tantalise without definitive proof. Today, a Scottish tourism group is spearheading an ambitious effort: a "surface watch" expedition aimed at uncovering the secrets of this age-old mystery. While the creature's appearance remains uncertain, local enthusiasts often envision a long-necked entity. The call is out for volunteers to join this historic Loch Ness monster hunt, set to take place on August 26-27. Notably, this quest marks the most extensive endeavour of its kind in over half a century, surpassing even the investigations of the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau in 1972. The team will employ novel surveying tools, harnessing never-before-used equipment to unveil the lake's enigmatic depths. Among these tools are thermal drones, poised to capture unprecedented underwater thermal images. Volunteers, central to this mission, will oversee surface watch operations, focusing on anomalous movements and unexpected disturbances in the water.
