I'm putting my consumer hat on to say that I'm a huge fan of circular economy. While I don't tend to purchase many things like clothing and shoes on a regular basis, it's great knowing that when I come to do so, there will be more and more sustainable options—and the quality will only get better with time. Spoiler: I've never bought PUMA shoes. But, this innovative work the company is doing is really inspiring. It always pains me to get rid of shoes (even those that are older and broken) because I know where they could potentially end up. Of course there are other sustainable projects taking place, but knowing that there's a compostable contingency would be groundbreaking. What are your thoughts on this? As part of the experiment, successfully concluded in late 2023, PUMA produced 500 unique pairs of its iconic Suede sneakers with materials selected for their ability to decompose, such as Zeology-tanned Suede. Puma takes step forward in reducing textile waste with polyester tech. Sports giant Puma has scaled up its textile recycling innovation known as RE:FIBRE and in the process said it's helping to cut the industry’s dependence on #plasticbottles as a source of #polyester It launched a pilot in 2022 and has produced recycled training jerseys for its sponsored football clubs since then. It has also used the tech to create Switzerland and Morocco replica kits for the Women’s World Cup. For next year, official Puma football replica jerseys including those for the #euro and #CopaAmerica tournaments will be made using RE:FIBRE recycled materials that derive from old garments and factory waste rather than only recycled plastic bottles. The company said this is helping its aim of reducing textile waste and is a long-term solution for recycling. Its RE:FIBRE process uses any polyester material – from factory offcuts to faulty goods and pre-owned clothes — and means new garments can be recycled from any colour textile to any colour desired. The four-step process starts with collection and sorting of materials, moves on to shredding and mixing, then melting down the shredded polyester and ridding it of previous dyes through a chemical recycling process. The melting allows the newly produced polymers to become ready to be spun and sewn into shape to create “good as new RE:FIBRE fabric which can be recycled again and again”. “Our wish is to have 100% of product polyester coming from textile waste. “Textile waste build-up in landfills is an environmental risk. Rethinking the way we produce and moving towards a more circular business model is one of the main priorities of our sustainability strategy.” The firm has also created a video containing computer-generated imagery to take consumers through the RE:FIBRE process, right down to the molecular chemistry at work. Today we celebrate #GlobalRecyclingDay, an important day of awareness and education on #recycling and #reuse, values that are increasingly necessary to safeguard the fragile ecosystems of our planet.    The circular economy is an issue to which our company has always been particularly sensitive: for the last two years, SCARPA has been interpreting the meaning of this anniversary through the Life Re-Shoes project - co-funded by the European Union's LIFE programme - which was created with the aim of providing an alternative and sustainable solution for the "end-of-life" management of shoes, introducing recycling practices as a new standard within the industrial chain.    Through the collection of used Mojito shoes, the complete reuse of all their components and the subsequent regeneration of the materials obtained, we aim to create new shoes that are both high performance and sustainable, using the latest innovative technologies. The new model, made from recycled materials, will be specifically designed to be easier to recycle at the end of its life, applying the concepts of design for recycling. An ambitious project that brings together top-class partners such as Alma Mater Studiorum - Università Di Bologna, Sciarada Industria Conciaria, Rubber Conversion, Innovando, Rubbermac.it and EPSI - European Platform For Sports And Innovation.   Still on the subject of the circular economy, one of the projects already realised is the "Maestrale Re-Made", the first ski mountaineering boot made entirely of plastic derived from production waste.
