According to Luminate’s mid-year report, 15% of the general population of the United States are superfans. ‘Superfans’, according to Luminate’s report, spend 80% more on music each month versus the average US-based music listener, and physical music buyers (vinyl/CDs/cassettes) are more than twice as likely (+128%) to be music super fans. Breaking down superfan activity by genre, Luminate reports that K-Pop fans spend 75% more money on music per month than the average music listener in the US. Afropop and Afrobeats fans, meanwhile, spend 121% more money on music categories per month than the average US-based music listener. One thing is for sure, superfans are a lucrative target audience, and as dominant music industry players, such as Universal Music Group, start pushing for more “artist-centric” streaming models, it’s the superfan category that could make a gigantic difference to the record industry’s coffers in years to come. #musicindustry #musicbusiness #audienceinsights #superfans

Superfan is one of the biggest buzzwords in the music industry this year. Beyonce, who has 319 million followers on Instagram, has so many the music industry is looking for ways to tap into the spending power of these fans as well as to unleash their creativity. MIDiA Research found that superfans were willing to pay for early access to music and the "BeyHive". Taylor Swift likes to keep her fans close and recently invited one lucky "Swiftie" into her home. The superfans term applies to enthusiastic fans that spend the most time or money on an artist. Hanna Kahlert, of Midia Research, said: "They are willing to go the extra mile on engagement, either in time or money. If they can t spend on a concert ticket, they will put in time." Streaming volumes have reached a plateau in most markets including the U.K. and the US. The pool of superfans is large: Goldman Sachs estimates that they could be worth more than $4 billion a year to the industry. FanCircles are leading the industry with the best tech out their and vision to match. Nearly a quarter of music lovers (23.4 per cent) classify themselves as a superfan of at least one artist, according to a survey from the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) the recorded music trade association. For the 16 to 24 age group, this rises to more than 30 per cent. They often buy more than one music format and four in ten go to at least one concert on every tour of their favourite artist. Jo Twist, BPI chief executive, said: "Passionate superfans have long played an essential role at the heart of music, only now they have even more visibility and influence thanks to social media and interactive entertainment platforms, as well as the more fan-centric approach of record labels." Resilience of Music: What’s old is new again. We see the revival of catalog songs in our playlists and on our awards shows. For instance, at this year’s Grammys, Tracy Chapman performed her 1988 single “Fast Car” alongside country artist Luke Combs, who recently achieved significant success with his cover of the song. “Fast Car” has also been covered by Jonas Blue, Sam Smith, Justin Bieber, and others. This example is a testament to the enduring appeal of great songs. New audiences continue to discover catalog songs as they engage with content across streaming services, social platforms, film, and TV. The long-term value of music creates compelling opportunities for both creating new music and investing in catalogs. The Enduring Value of Artist Development: The barriers to music creation have been lowered by the digital transformation of music production, distribution, and marketing. Today over one hundred thousand tracks are uploaded to streaming services daily, with the major labels distributing less than four percent of these tracks. Yet, at the Grammys, virtually all nominees in major categories are signed to major labels or established indies, demonstrating the role these platforms play in developing, promoting, and supporting artists. Put simply, labels have held enduring value by helping artists cut through the noise. Global Opportunities in Music: This year’s Grammys reflect the ongoing shift towards recognizing more diverse music, aligning with global consumer trends. Exciting growth is occurring in music genres and markets worldwide. In 2023, country music found crossover success on the pop charts, Latin artists continued to flourish in streaming, and genres like AfroBeats, K-pop, and J-pop continued to reach global audiences. All of the opportunity is in segmentation and selling to different types of fans in different ways. 2. A tragedy of the modern digital music business is that artists can't easily do this because they don't know who their fans are. Just total streams and total listeners fragmented across services. None of the rich heterogeneity that would enable you to understand who your music means the most to or who is willing to pay you more. 3. And even if you could, you don't have access to them. Anyone can make music and distribute globally, but ironically there are probably more mediators in 2023 than there were in 1993.

The kind that captures what’s happening in the people's cars or phones not a simulation scenario like we need to do with traditional research, this is the closest thing to that I’ve seen on the market. In this day and age, technology is doing some incredible things and this is an incredible and affordable option that WILL give you an edge over competitors. There is room in the world for both traditional and this modern form of research in my opinion. Needing databases of people to give real feedback on show content, station promotions, etc is key but from a music point of view, I believe this is the future of music research. The phrase “Government-led working group” will probably send your average Music Ally subscriber running to the hills, but tomorrow morning (April 18th) a crucial meeting takes place that should be of interest to everyone working in recorded music. It will mark the first time that UK music representatives have formally come together with the Government to discuss constructive reforms of how streaming revenues are distributed to artists, songwriters and other music makers, as well as other structural changes to industry practices. But will the voices of music makers actually be heard, or will the status quo be protected by corporate interests? The fact we’re sitting down at all is thanks to the UK Parliament’s Culture Committee and their response to the Fix Streaming campaign. The Committee’s landmark 2021 report brought wider attention to many of the fundamental inequities in the current label-centric model of music streaming, and recommended a “complete reset”of how that model operated. As a result, in September 2021 the UK Government committed to bring the industry together, to formalise a process of discussion and deliver results (or in their words “drive action”) on key issues, including equitable remuneration, contract transparency and platform liability. In the past three days, the music industry has witnessed pivotal shifts that are reshaping its landscape significantly one after another. Universal Music Group's decision to part ways with TikTok marks a critical moment opening up a MASSIVE opportunity for its competitors to dominate the biggest discovery platform on earth and signaling a potential shift in market share during this embargo. It also begs the question what will up and coming artists who are blowing up on TikTok do when they are offered a deal from Universal at this time only to know their song will not be available on the very platform that got the hot. Additionally this week we see the brilliant UMG consolidation strategy which will be a pattern you will see within the majors and other music companies this year via staff cuts or other key executive shifts. This phase of contraction and growth is coupled with a substantial explosion of “middle class artists” accounting for nearly $8B a year of the TAM. What does this spell for the music industry? For independent music companies, these changes carry profound implications.
