The success and appeal of a football team are closely tied to its ability to win matches and create an engaging experience.
Making a team one that everyone wants to watch emphasizes the importance of attracting attention and generating excitement.
In this regard, the role of a Sporting Director goes beyond just on-field performance; it plays a pivotal role in shaping the team's commercial success through increased profile, attention, and value.
What do you consider as essential factors for realizing Les Reed's core message of creating a captivating team that influences both on-field performance and commercial success?
A very relevant insight from Omar Chaudhuri, Twenty First Group in his presentation at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit where he highlights the crucial role of sporting performance in the success and value of football clubs.
“Acquiring top-tier players for less money, which often involves data-driven scouting or nurturing performance. This can encompass everything from coaching brilliance and exploiting set pieces to advanced sports science.
Prioritize understanding the core dynamics of a team's performance to unlock the true potential and value of a football club.”

During a game, we know that each member of a football team is assigned an important role. Each teammate counts on one another to perform their best and secure the win. We operate in the same way, as a Team, with the same goal in mind: victory. It is fundamental to our Team that we work together to bring you tried-and-true solutions and services that have won us many victories over the years.

Sometimes Sir Alex would give us a way to win, explaining how we could beat the other team.
But sometimes he would say to us “you have to find a way to win”.
That meant that if my player that I’m up against is taller than me, quicker than me and has more skill, what do I do?
I couldn’t say “I’m sorry boss, he’s stronger and quicker than me”.
I had to find a way to win that duel.
The challenges that we all have in our careers and businesses, especially at this moment in time, may be difficult but what do we do?
We have to find ideas and solutions and find a way to win.
Gary Neville is one of my favourite people to follow on LinkedIn, especially as a United fan.🔴 ⚽
I love how his posts so often relate to his time as a player, always tying into his current experiences as a businessman.
This post really shows how great of a leader Sir Alex was and also provokes some really interesting thoughts about how we overcome difficult times!

Reflecting on leadership this morning: You can use your experience to help others, but more often than not, not in the way you were taught. Show your teams how you got there, your struggles not just how you got over the final steps. Give them the freedom to find solutions, but guide them through understanding the challenges. It's the mark of a great leader to have confidence in their team. #LeadershipReflections#EmpowerTeams

Another pearler of a video from Gary Neville, someone who I respect hugely not only for his sporting successes but for the transition he has made into business and also because he speaks so much common sense!
So this is a ‘must share’!
His message is a key one in this video, in part about the need for high mental resilience and determination in this competitive world, but also to all those people/line managers out there, and particularly the thousands we have worked with over the last 20 years…
Get to know each of your team members, properly. Build deep trust with each of them, seek to understand their motivators, their hopes fears and dreams. And seek to personalise your management style with each of them to get the very best out of each person on your team, just like Gary talks so fondly about how Sir Alex did as his line manager.
And it won’t always be fun either, it won’t always be easy, sometimes one or two of those ‘difficult’ conversations will be transformational for you and a team member if you enter into it with the mindset to truly help them and be honest no matter how difficult the message is to say and to hear, and you stick to your the behavioural principles that you know are right for the situation.
All manner of things will then happen to engagement, performance and ultimately team culture.
What a great way to think about business. It’s certainly not easy but at times you have to find a way to be resiliant, be strong and to find a way that helps your business and the people that work with you overcome an opposition that looks stronger.
