Absolutely agree on simplifying ad metrics. Paired with that concept is getting clear on benchmarking. For example, I use ROAS as much as the next person, but a nuance that's rarely discussed in marketing rooms is determining "good" vs "bad" ROAS. Every company should have a clear definition of what a good ROAS is for their specific business/campaign/growth engine. Here's why: The punchline is, a 2X (or 3X or 4X...) ROAS can be profitable for one business or initiative, and it can fast track another into bankruptcy if unchecked, because the number that really matters at the end of it all is the net profit. Some products/services cost more to deliver to the customer than others, and that number needs to be understood and considered. ✅ Scenario 1—Selling a $1k digital course Ad spend: $10k Purchases: 20 Revenue: $20k ROAS: 2X Gross profit (Rev. minus ad cost): $10k Net profit (Gross minus operational expenses): $5k ❌ Scenario 2—Selling a $200 rug Ad spend: $10k Purchases: 100 Revenue: $20k ROAS: 2X Gross profit (Rev. minus ad cost): $10k Net profit (Gross minus operational/COG expenses): -$2k The first product does pretty good with a 2X ROAS, while the second product loses money with a 2X ROAS because it costs more to produce and deliver. It's also important to know your average lifetime customer value and average time to second purchase when considering ROAS benchmarks and ad budgeting. Marketing execs need to understand this and be able to confidently explain this to their teams and stakeholders.
