It has been found that our brains recognize words as pictures and hear the sound of them aloud in our head. Jenny Holzer is a contemporary artist whose latest works investigate the power that words have over our perceptions. This piece combines red and gold which generally evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy. We approached painting still lifes with coffee cups as moments of literal stillness, pauses where we granted ourselves the luxury of unguarded thoughts over moments of solace and contemplation. Painting them reminded us of the importance of avoiding oversimplification and how the most mundane and seemingly simple can usually be the most deceptively complex and challenging.
