The term ‘diamond setting’ refers to the fixture of a stone. It is an important factor in forming the overall design of the piece jewelry. The most common traditional settings are prong, bezel, pavé and channel. There are some designers that refuse to conform to traditional techniques. Dutch jeweller Leen Heyne is a testament to innovation and artistry. He creates rings where gems are not fixed in place by traditional settings. Instead, they are caught in a metallurgic whirl of tension, creating an illusion of magic. This rare technique is established through the belief of the material owning its own narrative. His designs are soft yet bold - intended for the wearer to unravel their own interpretation of what the design means to them. Located in his studio in Tilburg, in the Dutch province of Brabant, Heyne starts with a single strip of metal. His core focus is showcasing the rich nature of the material. Each sweeping bend, twist, and turn is the result of a very balanced approach, achieved through manual dexterity and physical force. The diamond symbolizes the action that demonstrates growth and movement - they are introduced when the strip of gold or platinum is being modeled, never after. In his hands, gold and platinum are folded, forced and twisted to create a tension that echos the innate flow of the metal. His pieces have delicate fine lines due to his meticulous sanding process. Heyne’s aesthetic is drawn from exposing the inner truth of the material whilst magnifying the absence of decoration.
