I lost my job last week in the latest round of #MetaLayoffs along with 5k+ other colleagues. I’ve been thinking about the beginning. When I first started my path with Facebook almost 5 years ago I was hired as a writer for a new comedy product. I was *so thrilled* to be hired as a full-time writer for the first time in my life. Something about having that job title made my creative ambition feel real. Bona fide - it says it right there on my checks. On the Monday of my orientation, my first day at Facebook, they sunset the project. It never made it to market and I didn’t spend a day in this dream role. Here’s what I got to do instead: 🎥 I became a content specialist and joined a team that launched the short-form video platform in Latin America that would eventually also be sunset and reborn as Reels. Then, I joined the inaugural Content team for Instagram Reels and helped build the framework for the global curation team. 🌎 At around the same time the CARE program was taking shape within the Product Content Operations team and I transferred there to work on mission-driven projects that included the Covid Information Center, The Small Business Hub dedicated to education and resources for business owners from underserved communities, and most recently the Climate Science Center. 💫 I advocated for and launched Meta’s first-ever Spanish language Voter Information Center during the 2022 U.S. midterm elections. An effort that took a tremendous amount of squeaky-wheeling, campaigning across legal and policy XFN, and championing buy-in from my leadership team. 🗳️ The result was a Spanish-language voter information center serving the 50M+ US Spanish speakers on the platform. Users were able to access fact-checked information from reliable sources and their trusted news platforms, register to vote, learn about candidate stances and more, in their own language. It’s the thing I’m most proud of. 🤖 This year alone I tested virtual worlds in the Metaverse, stress-tested civic content guidelines in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and evaluated creators for the launch of Broadcast channels in Latin America. Now … let’s connect!! I want to know what you've been working on. I'd love to brainstorm or just catch up. Right now I’m open to lunch, open to middle-of-the-day hikes, open to getting somewhere early enough to take advantage of happy hour. And eventually — let’s say, in a month or two — I will also begin to be #opentowork. I hope to find myself in a role at the intersection of content and social good again. But as I’ve learned, the next thing could be wildly different than I imagine.

Here we have yet another shining example of the not-so-shiny underbelly of the new remote-working wave: "Employed Freelancing" You appear employed by the company, but really you're a freelancer with zero company benefits and all of the tax liability. It's utterly galling. As a freelancer, a genuine freelancer, you choose the company, the projects, the time frame and the pay scale. It's up to the client to agree with your parameters and negotiate if need be. But when a company touts an ✨eXcItInG✨ opportunity and then seeks to pay you a set salary range, ask that you work within a certain time frame, and provides absolutely zero perks to working for the business, it no longer becomes an "opportunity" for the freelancer, it becomes an example of exploitation. So, let me say it again, more clearly for those employers out there: If 👏 There 👏 Is 👏 Set 👏 Pay 👏 And 👏 Set 👏 Hours 👏 It's 👏 Not 👏 Freelancing Pay your bloody workers and pay your bloody taxes! /rant

Things no one tells you about losing your job in 2023: - You'll have to source your self-worth in-house. We don't even realize how much of our confidence is outsourced until something dramatic such as being laid-off happens. Use this time to build a real, resilient sense of self-worth for the person that you are and everything you have to offer. - You are going to have ups and downs. The downs are obvious, the ups not so much. But trust me, you'll have both. - You will have the chance to re-evaluate your own passions. It might not be the ideal timing, but getting a chance to observe where you are and where you want to be is never a bad idea. Ps. I could really use your help. If you know anyone that's hiring remote content marketing/social media fairies - please send them my way! 🧚🏼♀️✨ #hiring #contentmarketing #jobhunt #layoffs2023 #layoffs

"Senior Copywriter (Direct-Response) & Community Manager |Blockchain and Web3 expert. | I put brands in front of as many customers as they can handle | B2B & B2C | SEO Content Writer | Copywriting Coach
If you're a remote job or physical job seeker, I'll share a simple search tip you can use when searching for recently advertised jobs on different social media platforms. ____ 1. Facebook. If you want to search on Facebook, go to your search bar, and type #hiring [add your industry], select the "latest" option, and hit enter, you'd see all the jobs in your field that were posted that moment. For instance, if you're a writer, you'd type #hiring writers" in the search bar, select "latest", and click enter. ____ 2. LinkedIn. On LinkedIn, type #hiring [add your industry], select "posts", select "past 24 hours", click on the "location" icon and pick the location you want the jobs in, or pick "remote" if you're looking for remote jobs , then hit enter, and you'd find very recent jobs that were posted in your industry, around your location. _____ 4. Instagram. I'm not very conversant with Instagram, but I decided to try it out with this tip to see what would pop up on the search, and this is what I found. On Instagram, just type #hiring, then click on "tags", it'd display hashtag results like #hiring", "#hiringnow", #hiringalerts", etc. Then you can scroll through and see if you'd find recent jobs in your industry. _____ 5. Twitter. Twitter's method is almost the same with the one I shared about Facebook above. Just go to Twitter search and type #hiring [add your industry], then click on latest, you'd find jobs that were posted few seconds ago in your niche. You can also use the #hiringalert tag on Twitter too. _____ If you're a remote or physical job seeker, and you diligently do this everyday for 1-2 weeks, on all platforms I mentioned above, and you have the right skills+qualifications, you should land a decent job. Also, you're at liberty to play around the filters on these platforms. You might discover more than what I shared here. I hope someone finds this helpful. To your success! © Emmanuel Thompson.
