On September 21, 2023, I testified at the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees Meeting about the action items on receiving a building for my Early College High School. This has been a work in progress in my life for 8 YEARS as I am part of the first graduating class. I remember canvassing with classmates during high school, rained on as we refused to give up and knocked on door to door, all day, asking people for just 2 minutes of their time to vote for the 2018 bond that would allocate funding for my school. For me, helping ECHS isn't a choice: I knew things had to change, and long after I graduated, things finally have.
The action items regarding the ECHS building passed late last night.
Thank you, RRISD Board of Trustees; thank you ECHS PTSA, to the current students who came and testified, and to every community member out there who acted.
My testimony can be accessed in the link below: I start speaking at 1:22:24, and below are the words I chose to share with the board:
Good evening Round Rock ISD board of trustees,
My name is Lilli Xiang. I am here to speak in support for approval of action items i2 and i3 on tonight’s agenda. I am a member of the first graduating class of Early College High School, the class of 2020.
I came from a group of students that had a very unique experience. As we navigated the numerous challenges of being the first students to ever attend ECHS, all we had to keep us going were promises of the adults who were supposed to take care of us, prioritize our safety and well being, and advocate for us.
Since the beginning of my freshman year, in 2016, we were told that by my junior year, we would get a building. We were promised a place to gather, a space of permanence we would feel comfortable in. That was 5 years ago (the time the building was supposed to be ready), and none of these promises have been kept.
Today, the need of a building for ECHS students is greater than ever. The world has become an increasingly violent and unpredictable place, and for students across the country, including Round Rock ISD, each day in school could be their last. Why are we not doing more to protect students?
The broken promises surrounding a building has also taken a long term mental and emotional toll on ECHS alumni. In college, it took me years to believe that when someone in educational administration would say something was going to change for the better, that it would actually happen. As the eldest alumni, I have had to guide many of the more recent alumni through this as well to help them transition into an educational environment that they feel actually sees and hears their concerns/cares about them. How many more years will I have to do this for?
I am now the first ever Alumni Representative on the ECHS PTSA executive board, and I am here to tell you what I have been saying the past 8 years: do something.
