For much of the past two decades, Europe's luxury market has counted on the ferocious appetite of Chinese consumers to bolster its bottom line. But foreign luxury brands are facing a reckoning in China. Not only is China’s economy entering a more uncertain phase, giving consumers pause, but homegrown designers and labels are also gaining ground. The questions now are which European brands can still rely on China, and how China's domestic designers can capture a share of the pie. In my latest story for The Wire China: https://lnkd.in/eX74PhCY

Shouldn't the UN and International Trade organizations have, already, made it a law/regulation for all its trade members that no "big" designer can copy ethnic enterprises' products, manufacture it with non-natural materials and dyes, and using non-original artisans' work, selling them at way below pricing and crippling original investors, working towards assisting women, in countries of Africa? Colonialism of this sort, still flourishes, never allowing the countries they have already raped and impoverished, to ever raise their heads in their economies. Wicked, wicked! Read about Zara and Steve Madden doing just that! https://lnkd.in/gKcDcux9 Pages 271 .... (Also a good book to advise new fashion designers never to get caught to the likes of the Bart Solomon's of the world!)

How To Show Cultural Insensitivity! 😱 In the last couple of years, the fashion industry has no short of campaigns that show clear signs of cultural insensitivity. Some companies don't seem to learn or appreciate the importance of being cultural sensitive. Here we go again. 😡 Long story short...here's what happened recently that angered many. "A new media company in China has been accused of cultural disrespect after it staged a photo shoot in which models were perched upon traditional altars inside an ancestral hall. The shoot, by the firm CIQI CHINA, which is based in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, southeastern China, sparked fury among villagers in Chaoshan and online, according to a report by southcn.com. It was part of a campaign to showcase Chaoshan culture and was organised around the theme – Shenzhen Fashion Wins Power. Female models were captured wearing modern attire, including white dresses, suits, jeans, and black vests." (Source: smcp.com). 😓 Sacred places like an ancestral hall is not a place anyone want to fool around. Its a place about ancestors, lineage, culture and memories. The campaign is a real faux pas. Disrespectful. Poor taste. Period. Its funny. I would think that as a Chinese company they will have a better appreciation of cultural sensitivity. Apparently no. If going viral is the KPI, I think they have achieved it. What's your thoughts? I'm Kelvin Cheong 鍾冠雄. Happy to connect. Championing African fashion in high end sector, redefining its essence, and preserving artisanal skills are imperative steps that align with the most sustainable and ethical practices. Africa, the cradle of humanity, is not only the origin of our species but also the wellspring of innovative design and cultural richness. It's where luxury truly belongs. Luxury and mass production, as we know, are and should be recognised as a contradiction. By celebrating Africa's rich heritage of craftsmanship and nurturing its burgeoning luxury industry, we not only redefine what luxury means in a global context but also foster economic empowerment, environmental responsibility, and social inclusivity. In this journey, we honor tradition, empower artisans, and create a legacy that resonates with the values of conscious consumers worldwide, reinforcing the idea that luxury should always be synonymous with sustainability and ethics.
