The buzz of doing what you love!!!! Last Friday we got to deliver 2 bespoke Forum Theatre workshops for an NHS Finance Department. And even after a full on weekend, I am holding on to the warmth, the laughter, the genuine enquiry, the excitement and the knowledge that we delivered something very meaningful. Importantly: - Our user research enabled us to script scenarios that 100% reflected our audience's everyday challenges. - The pre-workshop information set out how we work and got rid of anxiety about role-playing. Our professional actors are there to do that stuff! - Our audience embraced the opportunity to re-direct the scenes, providing on point, timely feedback to turn things around. - Laughter echoed round the room but there were quiet moments of reflection too. But it doesn't end there. This week I will send out our follow-up resources including video clips so the teams can continue to review, reflect and embed any changes to the way they work. I cannot understand why this is even being discussed. If we are being serious about growing theatre audiences, it's not just about ticket prices, it's about providing access. And just like ramps, hearing loops & relaxed performances, content warnings are all about access. If you don't need a ramp, a hearing loop or a relaxed performance, you simply ignore them. Same applies to trigger warnings. We should not be talking about removing access. Ever.

This is a great The Stage article from Lyn Gardner, Speak up: youth theatre is vital in elevating the next generation's voices! Wonderful to get a shout out as a theatre company creating social change through Youth Theatre alongside our friends Company Three and Prime Theatre! Our favourite quote from the article….. “The young can feel a terrific burden of expectation imposed on them by adults, (whether it is to pass exams, get into university or grow up to solve the climate emergency for us all) but we often dismiss their opinions and feelings as having no consequence on the grounds of their age. If we really want to listen, the tool to do that is already available and it is called youth theatre. Theatre already has in place the infrastructure – in terms of geography, space and resources – to support this growing practice. Why not seize this opportunity to become an extraordinary listening space for young people’s voices? It won’t be easy and it will require proper resource and long-term commitment, both to young people and to developing a creative practice. But the potential dividends for theatre and for society are incalculable. Those working in theatre often talk evangelically about the potential for theatre to create societal change. Yet the same people also often view their community work as somehow being less valuable than their main-stage hit. But if you don’t really value this work perhaps, it’s an indication that you don’t really value your community.” We love you Lyn! Read full article via: https://lnkd.in/egTW_Wgp

🎤 Your Public Speaking Coach | For Business Owners Ready to WRITE their Captivating Speech, DELIVER it with Confidence, and CONVERT Audiences Into Clients | 🎙️ Be In Demand Podcast Host
Tucked away in the woods of Vermont, lies a little theatre in the town of Dorset. This tiny wooden building with red velvet cushion seats only holds about 200 people. That’s 200 fans of the arts coming together mesmerized by the performers on the stage. This play, titled Still, had two scenes and only 2 stars. The show opens with them laughing and catching up like old friends do when it’s been years since they last saw each other…when they were in love, with careers ahead of them, and went their separate ways. It was funny, thought provoking, and a tear of sorrow turned to joy in my eye as the curtains closed. Telling your story can have that same profound effect. You want to take your audience on a ride as you tell your story: the highs and lows. When you put yourself back into your story, the audience will feel, see, and hear it like it’s happening for the first time. If you’re not telling stories that have your audience on the edge of their seats, then you’ve probably stepped into teaching mode. You want to entertain your audience to learn from you, hear your advice, and take action. That happens when you’re speech is compelling, captivating, and converting. Let’s get your story heard by more people and have them talking about you, how you help others, and the solutions you provide. In other words, let’s get your client roster filled with your ideal paying clients, who are excited to work with you. Grab your seat inside IN Demand Signature Speech. ✅SpeakAndStandOut.com/SS Did you find this helpful? Share below what your favorite TV show or movie is.

For the most part, Professional Speakers are solo acts and may not have the skills to be effectively present with other speakers, or to develop a dual perspective. The skill set required to contribute effectively to dual or group presentations – to simply be on stage with others - is one that is readily demonstrated in the performing arts as performers focus their connection with an audience through a heightened awareness of other ‘performers’. In “Point/Counterpoint: A Connected Perspective”, professional theatre practitioners Simone de Haas & Lewis Jones demonstrate the art of combining contrasting voices and ideas to create a unique approach to audience engagement. The breakout session itself will be a practical demonstration of how to apply the principles of stagecraft to being on stage with others and will include practical exercises that will ensure participants can readily apply these principles to their practice as professional speakers. #PSACONNECT24 #PSACONVENTION #PSAPROFESSIONALSPEAKER #CONNECTEDBUSINESS #CONNECTEDAPPROACH #CONNECTEDCONTENT

After a trip to the Torch Theatre no live event to write about this week. The national company has written about itself over 30 pages of text; there I returned. It is a place that has no like. Words of self-describing are deployed where the actions in the world are the complete opposite. "The annual report by the National Theatre of Scotland for 2022/2023 offers analysis of its audience by gender, ethnicity and age group, with a comparison with the prior year. A graph shows the location of the audience based on the Scottish index of multiple deprivation. "The number, as illustrated, “76,751 people attended our productions and events” is printed in large-format text and repeated. The National Theatre of Wales: audience data is restricted. No analyses or feedback are admitted into the public domain. "The word “transparency” occurs five times in the Welsh report. Its last occurrence reads on page 21: “NTW is developing a new communications approach... centres audiences and prioritises transparency, including a new tone of voice and website.” "The new website, as recorded, removed the decade-long record of community participation." https://lnkd.in/eFqwWU-q

Without A Boundary Chaos Can Ensue... Clear boundaries in relationships are vital, but the importance of boundaries is often overlooked. What is and isn't acceptable in terms of conduct, performance, quality and more aren't discussed as important points that are to be adhered to, more a hope that everyone understands what's required and why. Hope is a good place to start, but without specific boundaries being introduced, the value and need of the boundary explained, and agreement to operate within the boundary obtained, you could get stuck. Here's an example from the Palace Theatre in Manchester ahead of my daughter and I visiting this coming weekend. - Show consideration for your fellow audience members who have come to enjoy the performance on stage...(not from you as an audience member). - be kind to our dedicated staff ( nice way of saying 'don't be a plonker'). - Anti social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated. (as above...behave). I've noticed these boundaries being communicated by theatres following a recent media story where a Tina Turner theatre show was interrupted following some audience members singing along, and apparently causing an issue when asked to leave the theatre. So, what boundaries might you and your organisation think that everyone is clear about, and understand, but they might not? Remember, the only people who tend to complain about a boundary being in place, are those people who benefit from it not existing.
