My 3 takeaways from Cannes Film Festival this year: 1) The independent film market is transitioning more and more to commercial genres and storylines. Dramas in particular lately, even with renowned directors, have struggled at the box-office and are of less interest to streamers. Many SVOD services value a title on how captivating the first 5 minutes are, for fear that viewers tune out. This is encouraging a shift to bigger mainstream titles, though as the budget climbs the volume can shrink. 2) Indies are also increasingly expanding into TV. No longer the second place silver screen and again fueled by the SVOD wars, TV is becoming an important focus. A24's success with Beef on Netflix or Euphoria on HBO Max are prime examples of this and we heard more independents will soon be joining the game. 3) Non-English language titles are more popular. The top 2 prizes this year were taken by a French and German film respectively. This is not unprecedented at Cannes of course but the buying frenzy around some of the less global languages is. We already have seen the dominance of Korean Movies and TV series with titles like Squid Games and Parasite and its likely other countries will rise as audiences become increasingly accustomed to subtitles. My best guess is Bollywood will become increasingly global but let's see! The great thing about all three of these trends is they marry up nicely with airlines and our other non-theatrical markets. The more commercial movies, TV series and diversity in languages there are the better for our customers too. Dinner is a brilliant Nigerian movie on Netflix. It is a simple yet captivating story about the complexity of friendships. It grabs you from the first scene and at the end, you are happy that it is a time well spent. The movie is a perfect example of the kind of filmmaking that I advocate - one that leverages storytelling and great acting, rather than special effects and big-budget production and costume designs. For one, Nigerian producers contend with a lean budget and our knowledge and resources regarding CGI (computer-generated imagery) are limited. So local movies that lean heavily on special effects tend to come out poorly, with the digitally generated imagery and environment looking unreal and somewhat laughable. But films like Dinner play to our strength, history and culture in moviemaking. Typically, Nigerians tend to recall films that have a great plot, and relatable storyline, such as Rattle Snake, and N’kan be. Kudos to Dinner’s producer, Jay Franklyn Jituboh, who also wrote and directed the flick! It is films like this that make living in Nigeria tolerable, providing small joys. Despite the madness around and the gradual descent into anarchy, some things still make one proud of being a Nigerian. Dinner is one. Watch it. JO

My biggest Christmas treat has been teaming up with my favourite UK TV channel, Talking Pictures TV, to audio describe the 1951 film 'Scrooge' for a screening on 28th December. This audio described screening is a first for TPTV (who are already doing amazing work subtitling 95% of their output). Aaron Chambers has done an excellent job mixing the descriptions into the film (not an easy feat with the soundscape and quality of older films).   Audio description (AD) is an accessibility tool: if you're blind, have low vision, or your eyes are 'busy' sorting Christmas presents, or cooking (or you're just hiding from everyone in a darkened room) this special screening will include my voice describing the film's visual elements so that, along with the film's own dialogue and sounds, you'll be able to follow the story without missing anything. It's a bit like turning it into a radio play.   And unlike most broadcast AD, TPTV are providing this screening as an instance of ‘open’ AD – with the description playing automatically along with the film. A great opportunity to raise awareness of what AD is and does without any fiddling with settings.   ‘Scrooge’ a pretty faithful adaptation of a literary classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’. Indeed the film starts with the opening of Dickens’ book. In response, I’ve tried to refer back to Dickens’ original words where possible to furnish an audio description track that reflects and respects the film’s origin. For example, Charles Dickens described Scrooge’s pre-reformed approach thus: “Even the blindmen's dogs appeared to know him; and when they saw him coming on, would tug their owners into doorways and up courts..” For the same scene in the film, I used the following description: “A thick scarf muffled around his face, Scrooge marches past a bustling bakery. A dog tugs its blind owner clear of Scrooge's path."   Unfortunately, in many respects, Alastair Sim does not conform overly closely to Dickens’ description of Scrooge: “The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue; and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice. A frosty rime was on his head, and on his eyebrows, and his wiry chin.”   The best I could do, given Alastair Sim’s less ‘pointy’ appearance was to steal the adjective ‘frosty’ to describe this Scrooge’s white hair. But the descriptive opportunities provided by Alastair’s glorious facial expressions more than made up for any physical dissimilarities.   I hope the audience enjoy it as much as I enjoyed describing it. Have you ever experienced the subtitles' quality that ruined the entire film or programme? My family and I recently did... As my brother-in-law wanted to watch Top Gun: Maverick, we opted for a Paramount+ trial. This service is free for a week, but then requires a monthly payment of £6.99. My family often watches content with English subtitles, so we were happy that subs for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing were available. However, they were AWFUL. The experience was ruined completely. All of the subtitles appeared on the screen way before the audio. We're not talking half a second or even a full second. We're talking at least five seconds. This meant that the entire action was spoiled. There were no surprises coming. Jokes were completely ruined. All the tension was gone. Additionally, the subtitles often had three lines, and those that featured more than one speaker were broken in a way that made it hard to read. Paramount+ and any other streaming service providers: this is a polite request to invest in specialists in the field of subtitling. Especially when your film's worldwide box office makes you almost $1,500,000,000 (and more than half of that number represents international sales). Respect your viewers. When creating budgets, allocate appropriate funds to the AVT (which, after all, is what brings you viewers and makes you money, both abroad and domestically).
