We're now seeing the #documentary version of what's been happening in Hollywood box office scripted films for years... Bigger tentpole #docs with more global reach, more proven genres (#crime #sports #food #music), and more recognizable IP / Talent / Access. At the expense of everything else that doesn't check ALL those boxes. TLDR of the Variety article below: 1.   The documentary industry is experiencing a contraction in the volume of content ordered by major networks and streamers due to the industry reckoning with its past decade of excessive spending. 2.   The demand for highly accessible and easily promotable documentary content has increased, with subjects like crime, food, music, and sports being the most popular in the marketplace. 3.   Despite the contraction, spending on nonfiction and documentary content is expected to grow as these genres play a crucial role in offsetting scripted programs and keeping subscribers engaged. 4.   The availability and promotion of docs on the big streaming platforms have allowed the ones that breakthrough to reach wider audiences and receive more attention than ever before. 5.   Platforms are increasingly interested in series (moreso than one-off feature docs) that can appeal to international audiences and have built-in fan bases, particularly in the music and sports genres. 6.   Filmmakers need to be strategic in developing projects that can gain an audience and financial support, with issue-driven projects facing more difficulties in capturing attention. 7.   Access-based, celebrity biographies and films revisiting history and pop culture icons are strong genres in the field, as they are instantly recognizable to viewers and easily recommended. Solutions? More independent financing? More festival acquisitions? Direct-to-consumer #content on YT/IG/TikTok? All of the above?  ZEE5 Global’s slate of original series and films are beginning to pay dividends for the South Asian content streamer in the U.S. We recently reported the service had seen Stateside viewing rise 35% year-on-year and new stats released today show the amount of time original content is being viewed is up by an even higher amount, 46% over the last year. I've spoken to Amazon and Netflix executives about what's key for Independents to submit their scripts. Here is what they both agreed is the basic information they want to see in your Development Package. 1. Every Independent that has gotten a production deal, had a Producer that knew both the creative and business side of this business. Make sure Development of your project reflects both the creative and production needs of the company you're submitting to. b.
