Barney's New York. IYKYK. Every fashion-lover's dream store. Brands such as Comme des Garcons, Christian Louboutin and Azzedine Alaia were introduced to the American luxury market there. They championed independent designers and offered a carefully curated selection that ensured loyal shoppers were not dressed like everyone else. The beauty department was equally well stocked with cult status brands not widely available. Fred's, the in-house restaurant, was the fashion industry equivalent of what Michael's is for media - the go to destination for celebrity sightings, and always crowded. The annual warehouse sale was a fashion industry event in itself, with lines snaking around the block for the opportunity to buy heavily discounted designer goods. People would literally disrobe in the aisles as there were no fitting rooms at the sale. Barney's filed for bankruptcy in 2019, leaving a huge void in the lives of many fashion afficianados. In 2021, Barney's at Saks was launched at Saks Fifth Avenue; a shop in shop highlighting upcoming designers. Unfortunately, it never seemed to really take hold. Last week, on the first day of New York Fashion Week (September 7th), fast fashion brand Forever 21 launched a Barney's New York Collection. I should be happy that the name lives on, but this feels misaligned. Perhaps some things are best off being remembered as they were. #retailing #fashion #ecommerce

Inditex is the fashion giant behind Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Pull&Bear, Oysho, Stradivarius, Zara Home, and Lefties. Its brand Massimo Dutti, targeted at urban men and women seeking sophisticated and elegant clothing, has recently revamped its image. Its new logo will be implemented across all customer touchpoints. It can already be seen on the brand's website and social media. The change is a step forward in its strategy to renew the brand’s positioning. In November 2023, Inditex introduced a new store model for Massimo Dutti, with a more refined interior design, a new range of services, and the use of updated technological systems. All in pursuit of a more "premium" shopping experience for the customer. The new logo leaves behind the 'signature' style typography and replaces it with a sans-serif type, with some adornments in its construction that could resemble serifs. The new typography has better readability, but at the same time, it loses the concept of author's signature, which, combined with its Italian name, conveyed a sophisticated image as a design signature in the fashion world. With the new types, that effect is somewhat lost, and it becomes just another name. Surely, the executives at Inditex have thoroughly studied this rebranding and have compelling reasons to move forward. What do you think about this change? Upper Fifth Avenue has long been known as the home of fashion in New York, boasting a concentration of luxury flagship stores and mainstay brands. In recent months, new store openings and critical business investments from our members have further boosted the Avenue’s appeal, prompting a mid-teens increase in foot traffic over 2022 (Placer.ai) and the lowest historic level of retail availability since 2016.   According to JLL Vice Chairman Richard B. Hodos, “There’s a lot of newness coming because the area is the ‘Main and Main’ of New York City”, adding that “Prime real estate in the area has rebounded quicker than anyone predicted and the benefits will pay off for years to come.”   Brands like Tiffany & Co. Nike, PUMA Group and more have innovated their in-store experiences, alongside exciting renovations from TAG Heuer, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Burberry and Harry Winston. The rivet was originally patented by Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis on the 20th of May in 1873. The reason why Levi Strauss & Co. is celebrating it’s 150-years anniversary this year. Although the rivet is such a small design element on a pair of jeans (or jacket), it’s an important one to strength your pair on several places to last them longer. Most rivets are more or less the same as it comes to measurements, and also round-shaped, but still, there’re many options to make it your own as a brand, branding-wise, but also protection-wise for your furniture, (leather) saddles and so on. The fashion industry's "contemporary" category is experiencing quite a transformation, as outlined in this insightful article by Fashionista. We all know the consumer landscape has been significantly reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic - and the retail industry must now adapt their offerings to accommodate a consumer with new financial realities and shifting personal needs. Relevant contemporary labels highlighted in this article include Marc by Marc Jacobs, The Donna Karan Company, LLC., Kors by Michael Kors, Vince, alice + olivia, and Theory, servicing the important bridge between luxury and fast-fashion, often offering more timeless and versatile styles. In recent years, the category has seen new participants emerge such as Ganni A/S, Maggie Marilyn, Nanushka, STAUD, and Tibi. It’s all change at Bond Street tube this week! To coincide with London Fashion Week, the station has been renamed Burberry Street and adorned in Knight Blue, one of Burberry’s new brand colours. Perhaps an aim of this publicity is to build the foundations for Knight Blue to be registrable as a colour trade mark for Burberry. A colour/colours can be a very important part of a company’s brand identity which they will want to protect and stop competitors from using. Colours can be registered as trade marks, often referred to as ‘non-traditional trade marks’, however they are extremely difficult to register for a number of reasons. Below is a list of successful registrations, but in each case, the company was challenged by the UK Trade Mark Registry or competitors and had to fight for the registration. ●       The purple colour (Pantone 2685C) for chocolate products by Cadbury. ●       The orange colour (Pantone 151C) for mobile telecommunication services by Orange. ●       The red colour (Pantone 18-1663TP) for the soles of high-heeled shoes by Christian Louboutin. ●       The duck egg blue (RGB profile R 117 G 210 B 204) for jewellery by Tiffany. Why are colour trade marks so difficult to register? Because applications very often fall at the first hurdle of being able to identify the origin of goods/services of a particular undertaking – the main function of a trade mark. Being able to claim acquired distinctiveness overcomes this first hurdle and one thing the UK Trade Mark Registry and Courts will want to see is evidence of substantial marketing and advertising materials using the colour. Hopefully, someone at Burberry is keeping track of what’s happening at this station and the publicity and interactions it is generating. Or, as Christina Binkley notes, “New York Fashion Week needs a mom — someone willing to make hard choices, field flak and find workarounds or strategies to benefit the entire fashion family.” I never thought I'd miss the days of the Lincoln Center trailers or the Bryant Park tents. But, the current state of #NYFW feels untenable. How many #designers are suffering a lack of critical attention on their creative work because of the current NYFW scheduling kerfuffle? As we argue extensively in our piece on the idea of IRL+ (https://lnkd.in/ehE_bffx), runway shows are fashion's most familiar form of content and should be treated as such. ❗ If New York Fashion Week wants to stay relevant, it needs a holistic, integrated approach with centralized governance and planning to survive, even if only for a portion of the shows (e.g. IMG). I keep hearing from industry insiders that change is hard in the business of #fashion and #luxury. This always strikes me as odd because the industry is famous for its #creativity and #disruptive thinking. But, it is commonplace for brands to become stuck in their ways because even short-lived tactics quickly become habits simply through inertia and limited or poorly-targeted resources. We all know that the job of a fashion designer is hard and selling clothes is an uphill battle. But, the future of the industry depends on the creative and commercial output of these brilliant minds and the brands for which they work. Alex owns a boutique ecommerce store called "ChicWardrobe." This stylish store offers a wide array of trendy clothing and accessories for fashion-forward individuals. However, amidst the virtual racks of ChicWardrobe, a problem lurks. Alex, in an attempt to sound sophisticated, fills the product descriptions with convoluted jargon. In describing a simple black dress, Alex writes: "This sartorial marvel exhibits an exemplary amalgamation of onyx-hued fabric meticulously stitched with delicate needlework craftsmanship." This approach confuses potential customers. They're left scratching their heads. They cant decipher the true essence and appeal of the black dress (a quite expensive one, btw). As a result, sales remain stagnant, and ChicWardrobe struggles to gain traction in the competitive market. Then, Alex decides to make a change. Instead of drowning in flowery language, the product descriptions are revamped to be relatable and engaging. For that same black dress, the new description reads: "A timeless black dress that effortlessly combines elegance and comfort. Perfect for any occasion, this versatile piece will make you feel confident and stylish wherever you go." He doesn't alter the price tag. The impact is astounding. Customers resonate with the clear and compelling language, finally understanding the unique selling points of the products. The revamped descriptions breathe life into ChicWardrobe, and sales skyrocket.
