Our upcoming lecture will interpret the "First Emancipation," when thousands of people of African heritage secured freedom by the end of the 18th century. They would establish many of America's earliest free communities of color, which became the stomping grounds of free African American religious, educational, civic, and, most notably, political expression well before most African-heritage people obtained emancipation after the Civil War. https://lnkd.in/gJihnVfG

May is National Jewish American Heritage Month. According to the American Jewish Committee "Since 2007, Presidents Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden have all issued proclamations for Jewish American Heritage Month, which celebrate Jewish Americans and encourage all Americans to learn more about Jewish heritage and contributions to the United States Over the past 370 years, Jewish Americans have given to their communities and this nation as loyal and patriotic citizens, always grateful for the safe harbor that America provided for them. Jewish Americans have served in government and the military, have won Nobel prizes, headed universities and corporations, advanced medicine, created and performed in enduring works of performing and visual art, written great American novels, and become emblems of justice as members of the Supreme Court, and so much more. Perhaps most importantly, American Jews have always pushed America to live up to its promise as a nation that upholds freedom and justice for all. This month, we hope you will join us in celebrating the many contributions of Jewish Americans in the last 370 years and that you will learn more about the history, culture, accomplishments, and diversity of the American Jewish community." #nationaljewishheritagemonth #culturaleducation

Representation matters. Did you know that only 1.5% of the places listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Ohio relate to Black heritage? And in Cleveland—where approximately half of residents identify as Black—only 4% of National Register listings represent Black heritage. Cleveland Restoration Society is working to increase the representation of African American cultural heritage sites in the National Register. We are honored to be one of 21 recipients of an Underrepresented Communities grant from the National Park Service, which will enable us to nominate six historic Black churches to the National Register of Historic Places: Advent Evangelical Lutheran, Emmanuel Baptist, Greater Abyssinia Baptist, Greater Friendship Baptist, Nazarene Baptist, and New Life at Calvary. Today we are proud to celebrate Juneteenth! June 19th, 1865 was the day that the last American slaves in Galveston, Texas were freed upon the news that President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier. The Juneteenth flag is full of symbolism and in order to learn more about our nation’s history, it’s important to know its meaning. That banner with a bursting star in the middle is a symbolic representation of the end of slavery in the United States, and the true freedom of ALL Americans. THE STAR: This has duel meaning representing both Texas, the Lone Star State where the last slaves were freed, as well as all fifty states as displayed on the American flag. THE BURST: The bursting outline around the star is inspired by a nova, a term that astronomers use to mean a new star…a new America. THE ARC: Represents a new horizon: the opportunities and promise that lay ahead for Black Americans. THE COLORS: The red, white and blue represents the American flag, a reminder that slaves and their descendants were and are Americans. #juneteenth #themoreyouknowthemoreyougrow #blackhistory
