‼️Global initiative alert: BodyConfidentSport.com Words can’t begin to describe how I feel about this past week, let alone the past three years of working with a superstar team on this project. In November of 2019 a partnership between two world leading brands and two world renowned research centers joined forces. Dove, Nike, the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) and the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport shared a collective vision of a world where girls could fully accept and connect with their bodies while playing the sport that they love, without fear of what they looked like. Why is this important? Because research consistently shows that low body confidence is the number one reason why girls drop out of sport. But, it’s not just girls we need to instill with the knowledge and skills to be body confident. No, it’s the people around them, including parents, coaches and sport communities, who need to unlearn some of the harmful rhetoric and behaviors that reduce girls’ confidence when playing sports. So, we set out on a three year journey to develop the first evidence-based body confidence programs for girls and coaches in sport. Programs that could be adapted for different countries and cultures. This process involved connecting with 2000 girls and coaches around the world, and 9+ peer-reviewed journal articles. As you can imagine, a lot happened in this three year timeframe. We faced a global pandemic. Borders closed. We all caught COVID once…twice…maybe thrice. On a personal note - I got married, moved countries, and became a US resident. Needless to say, the last three years have been full of highs and lows, and it’s the amazing WOMEN LED team at the core of this project who were my grounding force and a key constant in my life. An individual person or brand can’t do this work alone, and if this project taught me anything, it’s the power of collective action. You just need to find your people, and my gosh how lucky am I to have found mine. Becoming certified isn’t just about adding another title to my LinkedIn. The journey challenged me to articulate my strengths, growth, and how I’ve pioneered change, not just at Storey Creative but in my community. For me, this certification is about building a legacy of creativity, kindness, and empowerment.
