This week, we chatted to Luke Barrow, founder of the men's mental health and suicide prevention community, Two Pints Deep. We're big believers in the impact of community on mental health so were keen to hear Luke’s story 👇 *** 🍻 What is Two Pints Deep and how did it start? We are a men’s mental health and suicide prevention community who are approaching our full charitable status in the coming weeks. Our main aim is to act as the bridge for men who struggle with their mental health, to break stigmas and encourage conversation to allow them to open up to what a solution may look like for them. I founded Two Pints Deep in February 2022, inspired by my own personal journey overcoming mental health issues that transpired following the death of my mum in 2019. Social anxiety, depression, gambling issues and I didn’t want to speak about any of them. I was embarrassed. 🍻 Why is the work that TPD does so crucial right now? I am, and always have been a normal bloke. It’s who we are at Two Pints Deep. But normal blokes need help. There is currently a huge gap between those that experience mental health issues and the solutions provided. There needs to be a middle ground, a safe space. Where we build our confidence and choose our solution. We lose an average of 13 men every single day in the UK. It’s time for action, and it needs to be accessible to everyone. 🍻 We're big fans of the name. What's it meant to represent? Being Two Pints Deep was my way in to vulnerable conversation. I felt more confident, a little warmer and within a safe space. And it’s what we want to recreate for men, eventually where we can do it without those two pints. Starting from the hardest hit areas and from the places men already feel comfortable. Not asking men to change habits, just add one more. 🍻 What a brilliant initiative! What's next for TPD? I spent the last 3 years working in the recruitment industry, worked my way up to managing our London office and a few weeks ago, I quit my job for good to work full time on Two Pints Deep. It’s a risk, but more needs to be done in this area. There are now 10,000+ of us across our social media platforms, and we run weekly free-to-attend exercise clubs in London and Manchester. Anyone is welcome, conversation is encouraged and vulnerability is celebrated. Our plans are to expand these to different cities, fund new community groups and shake up the way people talk about mental health through our content and projects. So watch out for us! In honour of Men’s Health Week, we’re spotlighting James and sharing his insights on mental health in the workplace👇 *** What are the top things James can help you with? 
 - Be your true self, find your purpose and increase confidence - Understand your strengths, values, and reset your life and career goals - Gain clarity on your career direction and support major career transitions - Overcome anxiety and burnout - Return to work after a period of absence What are some common mental health challenges men face in the workplace? Men can be affected by all sorts of things like confidence, depression, anxiety, stress & burnout, work-life balance issues, performance pressure, and even the stigma around mental health. The impact of these show up in different ways but they link to each other. For example, the impact of the stigma around mental health may mean men don't seek the support they need. Performance pressure can lead to stress, anxiety and reduced job performance. Work-life balance issues may lead to strain in relationships, and a feeling of a reduced sense of personal satisfaction, which can all result in burnout. What strategies do you recommend for men to manage stress and maintain mental wellbeing in a high-pressure work environment? 1. Identify stressors: note down when stressed to try and identify it. 2. Develop healthy coping mechanisms: exercise regularly, practice mindfulness & eat a balanced diet. 3. Create a support system: talk to friends & family, colleagues, a therapist or coach. 4. Set boundaries: avoid taking on too much, set & schedule working hours, and unplug after work. 5. Develop positive relationships: invest in good relationships at work & find a mentor. 6. Practice self-care: ensure you're getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and carrying out wellbeing activities including reading, listening to music and exercise. Company culture - what role does HR play? We’re big believers that company culture is a living, breathing thing. It’s made up of lots of little parts, and needs constant work. So what role do HR teams play? Well we’re certain about this - HR 👏 isn’t 👏 responsible 👏 for 👏creating 👏company 👏 culture. But HR does have an influence. Just as everyone and everything else has an influence - your managers, leaders, employee behaviours, your company values, processes & guidelines, your onboarding experience. Perhaps even your office pup 🐕

Mental health awareness week highlights 🌿 We kicked off May with a week full of events! Our CEO Joel Gujral and our high performance coach Richard Turner hosted a webinar on the power of movement. And coach Grace McGeehan inspired partner organisations with sessions on moving more for mental health. More events 🎤 Joel Gujral and Kathryn Cettina led a fantastic workshop on stress, burnout, and resilience. Team fun 🎈 In April, we celebrated moving to our new office with a friendly (and in some teams, competitive) round of mini-golf. Plus, 3 MYNDUP team members ran half marathons this month. Just one more for a MYNDUP relay team! Birthday bonanza 🎂 We celebrated eight birthdays this month! That’s a lot of cake 😆

Set clear boundaries between work and personal time. When work hours end, switch off work notifications and focus on hobbies, family, or relaxation. Prioritise rest as a necessity and not a reward. 💭 What are your top 2 pieces of advice for someone who has lost confidence in themselves at work? Acknowledge your achievements and reflect on past successes and positive feedback to remind yourself of your capabilities. I created a success log on Notion for small and big wins. Find support by talking to a mentor or a coach at MYNDUP for guidance and encouragement. Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone that knows nothing about you. 🫶 What is one way organisations can drive real inclusion for ethnic minorities in the workplace? They can work to foster a culture of sponsorship. It's not just about mentorship programs connecting ethnic minority employees with senior leaders, it's about creating sponsors who actively advocate for them and mention their names in rooms they aren't in. Many have mentors, but few have sponsors who can truly elevate their career trajectory. This kind of advocacy is crucial for breaking down barriers and ensuring ethnic minorities have a fair shot at career growth. #MeetOurPractitioners

Great to see some positive feedback from yesterday's webinar on movement for your mental wellbeing, with Richard Turner and Joel Gujral. ICYMI, here are our 3 key takeaways 🔑 1. Movement can be broken down into general movement, cardio and resistance training. But it's not always possible to do all 3. Finding something you enjoy is key 🥳 2. Visualisation techniques and music therapy can help us to get moving. Music with a certain beat per minute can actually help you when you're exercising! 🎶 3. Life's busy. It can be challenging to fit movement in when there's a lot going on. Things that can help are finding your optimum time for fitting movement in and creating a routine. Habit building techniques are something to try here 🔂 #mentalhealthawarenessweek #movementformentalhealth
