#InTheNews: A lack of diversity in genetics research has real implications. That’s why the Medical University of South Carolina and Helix are working together to improve diversity through the "In Our DNA SC" study. “We have new ideas. We have ways we can do this. We'll get there,” said Mr. Lee Moultrie, a healthcare advocate working as part of this project. The lack of diversity in genetics research has serious healthcare implications. Since the completion more than 20 years ago of the Human Genome Project, which mapped most human genes for the first time, close to 90% of genomics studies have been conducted using DNA from participants of European descent. Even slight genetic variations can significantly impact health outcomes. Some genetic variants are more common among Black Americans than White Americans. Misclassifications can be avoided if “even modest numbers of people from diverse populations are included in sequence databases,” the authors wrote. Years of research indicating the importance of the hormone oxytocin in pairing, coupling, simpatico relating, etc - animals to humans - now being “upended.” Fascinating new research shows NOT the invalidity of the research per se.. And the boost oxytocin provides … But that mammals are so WIRED to couple up.. that we will find a way without it! #oxytocin #upregulation #science #communication #connection #coaching

This summer, RFK Jr. (in)famously invoked a speculative early-pandemic genetics paper, to sow viral misunderstanding of #COVID...and of human diversity itself. In a new preprint, John Novembre and I explain how that paper's core contentious claim reflected a basic sampling artifact -- which reviewers, editors, or authors themselves should ideally have caught (perhaps with better statistical training, and/or better incentives for reviewer scrutiny), to convey findings correctly, averting later weaponization in heated public discourse. To that point, we'd love any insights/feedback from readers of the preprint, to help hone it as needed, to exemplify how crowd-mind assessment can help science work better. 🙏
No evidence that ACE2 or TMPRSS2 drive population disparity in COVID risks (reply to Hou et al. (2020))

The tendency for #myopia to run in families may, at first sight, suggest that genetics plays a part in its development. But could that link be less nature and more nurture? Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-B6KANA #myopiacontrol #myopiamanagement
