Founder & CEO at Human Leadership Lab | Speaker, Facilitator, Coach, Researcher, Investor | I help organisations, teams and individuals unleash their leadership potential

I’m in my late-30’s. I’ve had FOUR career pivots. And I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. But here’s the thing. I’m not special. And I’m certainly not alone. I meet professionals in transition on a daily basis. And the stats tell us the same story. Most of us will juggle 17 jobs across 5 different careers in our lifetimes. So when it comes to our careers, the only constant is change. Here are my top 5 tips for growing your career (no matter what path you’re on): 🧭 LEAD WITH YOUR VALUES When you know your values, you know what to say yes and no to. Saying “yes” to opportunities that resonate with your values and “no” to those that don’t keeps you authentic. If it’s not a HELL YEAH, it’s no. Your values are your personal brand. My core values are courage, community and compassion. If an opportunity doesn’t align with these values, I turn it down. ✏️ RUN EXPERIMENTS Act like a scientist and treat your career like a series of experiments. Test drive options. Side gigs, projects, or volunteering are your “try before you buy”. Where does your energy spike? Use this insight to guide your choices. I founded Human Leadership Lab after noticing I consistently felt a "high" when I was helping people unlock their leadership potential. 💰 PUT COINS IN THE JAR Build community before you need it. Make deposits into new relationships. Genuinely care about people. Help them. Build trust. What goes around comes around. Your community can be a powerful source of growth, encouragement and opportunity. My last THREE jobs have come from warm intros. Your network is your net worth. 🤓 ALWAYS BE LEARNING Stay alert to new opportunities and industry trends. Regularly update your knowledge and skills to remain relevant and competitive. Being proactive will open doors you didn’t even know existed. What’s my version of this? I recently partnered with the Harvard Kennedy School to study the impact of AI on leadership development. 👩🏻💼 MASTER THE INTERSECTIONS Find the unique intersections of your skills and interests. Draw a Venn diagram. Embrace the niche areas where your expertise can shine. For example, if you’re a lawyer with a passion for entrepreneurship, you might pitch yourself as being helpful to startups working in heavily regulated industries such as health, education or mobility tech. That’s how I broke into venture capital. Whether you’re climbing a ladder or swinging around the career jungle gym, it pays to be intentional about your professional growth. 💬 What are your top tips for growing your career? ♻️ If you enjoyed this, repost so your networks can benefit too (sharing is caring!). #linkedinnewsaustralia #career #leadership #reinvention #futureofwork

Cannot agree more about leading with your values 💪🏻💪🏻 - they are your non-negotiables, your inner compass. If these feel off or unmet, you're not in the right place and you could lose focus in your career, just like when you're caught up in a bad friendship/relationship - you lose yourself for a time. Getting clear on my values gave me so much structure in terms of narrowing down where I aim to now

Absolutely loved this May Samali, MPP, CPCC, PCC. I've had a few pivots in my career so far, and I think the thing that has been instrumental to success is 1) courage to take the leap into the unknown, 2) belief that things would always work out, 3) having support - whether that be from coaches or friends and family, 4) leaning into new opportunities that present to me and 5) being intentional about my actions!

Magic May Samali, MPP, CPCC, PCC I am loud and proud to be a modern elder of 49 years. Career points have varied many pivots between enterprise, business, and presently looking at intersections of interest with human leadership and technology at the heart. Love your analogy to run experiments in your life and career. Each pillar above resonates as I was made redundant and have side hustle, which I am am not ready to jump into full time. So, your words and posts are inspiring at this pivotal time of reflection 🙏😇

I love this and shared it. Leading with your values is so important and really brings you peace. I left corporate after 24 years because my values weren’t aligning with those around me! I left to consult…maybe not permanently, but to really to hit reset and redefine my why! I needed to relearn to love myself and to unpack what it is I really love! I’m learning that I’m a deeply passionate person. I need a purpose and a really good story and something that’s personal to me in order to get excited about it. I know my worth, I love helping people and I know whatever is next may be my last and it’s going to align with my goals and values!

I'm about to turn 50 and I love helping people look at different careers, way into their 50's, 60's and beyond. I'm driving change around 2nd half careers and developing ways to combat agism. I coach people on knowing their worth - I'm a big fan of numbers and coach people on how they can articulate their value, particularly women who constantly undervalue themselves.

Thanks for being so transparent with this May Samali, MPP, CPCC, PCC. Love your line about how the only thing that is constant in our lives is 'change', this is so true. As humans we can shy away from change as there is the fear of the unknown, but it is so important for us to embrace it due its positive impact on our personal development. Thanks for sharing your tips and lessons, such a great post.

Love the “run experiments”! I resigned from my co-CEO position and wrote a book.

Leading with my values and running experiments have been an amazing way for me to navigate career changes in the past few years. The only constant in all of life is change!
