My thoughts on the American Federation of Teacher's partnering with GPTZero The Idea Behind AI Detectors The premise is simple: create an AI-powered tool that can detect and perhaps flag or filter content generated by other AI models, like GPT-4. At first glance, this might seem like a safeguard against misinformation or harmful content generated by AI. Why This Could Be a Bad Idea Fallibility of AI We must remember that AI detectors are also prone to errors. They may produce false positives and negatives, leading to unjust flagging or filtering of content. Ethical Concerns Who decides what constitutes "acceptable" or "unacceptable" AI-generated content? Creating an AI filter brings up significant ethical and moral questions. Technological Arms Race The more sophisticated the detector, the more advanced the AI it tries to detect will become. This sets the stage for a never-ending technological arms race. Resource Intensive Maintaining such detectors would require constant updates and monitoring, diverting valuable resources from more productive uses. Stifling Innovation Too many restrictions can hamper the creative and innovative uses of AI. Let's not forget that AI can also be a force for good, solving complex problems and making our lives easier. Food for Thought While it's crucial to ensure the responsible use of AI, an "AI detector" might not be the most effective or ethical solution. Instead, we should focus on educating the public about AI capabilities and limitations, improving AI safety protocols, and fostering cross-disciplinary discussions. https://lnkd.in/ebyURUgT

As a mom and as a lawyer who works in the area of AI, this article really resonated with me: https://lnkd.in/e3uXkXYA. Creating definitional literacy and developing frameworks of principles and norms are the building blocks of any institutional compliance program. They are also how we parent – we teach concepts and distinctions, we establish rules and expectations, and we impose consequences. Bouncing back and forth from dystopic and utopic extreme visions for what AI represents doesn’t help students learn about their own responsible uses of AI, what it means for their future, and how to be part of the conversation about a technology that will clearly have a huge impact on their lives. And as every parent knows, sometimes when you are talking with your kids about one thing, you’re really arguing about another – and that’s the case here, too. This is a discussion about technology – but it is really a discussion about learning and critical thinking, and why it’s important and how best to do that. Creating AI literacy in students and for all of us is a necessary part of healthy and informed public participation on this important topic.

Let me say this as many times as possible—AI detection is not reliable in an academic setting. Such systems use AI to try and catch AI. They cannot be audited, explain their reasoning, and often mislabel human writing for AI. Putting them into k-12 is not a wise decision. https://lnkd.in/dfCEJFAA
