Green job vacancies are on the rise – but workers with green skills are in short supply. Green job vacancies are increasing, but there is a shortage of workers with the necessary green skills. Job postings for green jobs are growing twice as fast as the number of workers with green skills. Only one in eight people currently possess relevant skills for addressing the climate crisis, with women being particularly disadvantaged. Green skills and jobs are proving to be resilient during economic uncertainty. To meet the demand for green skills, both employers and workers need to focus on reskilling.

Our data at Climate Emergency UK CIC is already improving useful for the sector... Today we are quoted in the first Green Jobs: State of the Nation Report from the Green Jobs Foundation because we asked the UK Combined Authorities (and the Greater London Authority) what green skills courses they are running and how many people had participated in these courses. Unfortunately, there were big regional differences. But this doesn't even include that outside of the combined authority areas, which have a greater level of long-term funding, there is likely to be even less choice and chance for people to take part in green skills courses. We need more investment across the country in green skills courses, an offer for free training for those wishing to transition from fossil fuel jobs, and a climate curriculum in our schools - like Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) call for.

Socioeconomic Analyst at DG EMPL ~ green employment and skills ~ forthcoming PhD candidate in gender economics @ UCL
The labour market is being continuously re-defined as we discover new ways of working and shift our patterns of production and consumption. 🟢 Transitioning to a climate-conscious economy is no exception.... ... and maybe you noticed it too. How many of us suddenly work in climate-related jobs compared to only a few years ago? Between 2022 and 2023, LinkedIn job postings requiring at least one green skill have grown by a median of 15.2%. But this is only one fragment of the story. The world of 'green' employment is much more complicated and extends beyond (let's face it, often greenwashed) LinkedIn. Now growing in demand, it spans from renewable energy, low-emission electricity production, circular economy, manufacturing of electric goods to insulation and other energy efficiency work, installation of clean energy technologies to nature restoration and much further. Yet, so far, green employment has been very difficult to measure due to a lacking one-size-fits-all definition but also capacity of statistical frameworks to distinguish greenness. I am excited to announce that in the European Commission, we recently launched a project with the Joint Research Centre to focus exactly on that. We aim to explore possible conceptual methods to monitor 'green' jobs in the EU with the overarching goal of monitoring socioeconomic characteristics of workers employed in these jobs. All this also in view of re-employment opportunities of those who may be negatively affected in the transition, mostly in fossil-fuel heavy industries 🟫, to broaden the evidence base for making the #transition #just and #fair. We need to talk about removing barriers. Only 4.8% of employees in our sector come from an ethnically diverse background, compared to the all-profession average of 12.6%*. There are a number of challenges that we have to address to successfully grow the green economy and ensure that everyone is able to access its benefits including: • A lack of information for job seekers about the opportunities available • A lack of diversity in green sectors putting off new entrants • A lack of accessible career pathways in the sector for underrepresented job seekers It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Tell us, what has worked for your organisation to provide more opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds? Read our recruitment guide for employers on ways you can transform your organisation. https://lnkd.in/ecjfj9qr Play your part in shaping the future of green careers. #ForceOfNature #NewtoNature *Data according to SOS-UK, The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
