“To our knowledge, this is the world’s first operating restaurant where both ordering and every single cooking process are fully automated,” said John Miller, CEO of PopID and board member of Miso Robotics.
Humans will hand you your food, it appears, but the robots will do the entire ordering and cooking process. This means, "The CaliExpress by Flippy kitchen can be run by a much smaller crew, in a less stressful environment, than competing restaurants — while also providing above average wages." We will see how long that lasts.
Above-average wages for fewer people will likely result in much higher profits, as it will also be safer, and there will be less food waste in the cooking process as errors and accidents are eliminated. There will likely be a more consistent experience from visit to visit as well, unless, of course, a robot is broken.
And, of course, it is being set up as Instagram bait. Who will be able to resist experiencing a robot cooking their food for the first time? That means lots of organic advertising (like this post) just to take photos and videos as the machines prepare their meals. It's a short drive for me to Pasadena, so I will probably take the bait and go to see it. But I'm also going to want to taste it. In the end, the taste of the food will either make or break this. This one will be interesting to watch.
