As a former Redditor, I've been following the news of #Reddit's impending IPO with mixed emotions. The platform that once felt like a digital home, where I could ask anything from recommendations for a buy-it-for-life product to tips on installing a new oven, has changed. Reddit's increasingly aggressive content and #data rights policies have driven many of us away, leaving a void in our online lives. So, it's ironic to see the very community that propelled Reddit to household-name status - the r/WallStreetBets crowd - now considering shorting the company's stock. The reasons cited range from concerns over profitability to fears of increased content moderation. But at the heart of it, there seems to be a sense of betrayal, a feeling that the platform has strayed from its original ethos. Having left Reddit due to ethical concerns, I can empathize. However, I don't wish ill upon the company. Instead, I long for a return to the "don't be evil" mantra once espoused by Google. I miss the sense of community and the wealth of knowledge shared by Redditors from all walks of life. In the face of Reddit's potential $6.5 billion valuation and the scrutiny surrounding its IPO, I find myself grappling with nostalgia and disappointment. It was reported yesterday that Reddit, Inc. will allocate shares of its IPO to 75,000 of its "power users". So how should investors think about this? EquityZen's Brianne Lynch shares "this move really fits into Reddit's whole ethos as a social media platform. They are a platform that really gave a voice to the retail investor. As the first social media platform to go public since 2019, Reddit brings a rather unique user base and content-driven approach to the table. I'm a Reddit user myself, so I couldn't help but take a closer look at them: 1) Strong growth: 20% revenue increase in 2023 and a narrowing net loss are positive signs. 2) User engagement: I have to say that offering IPO #shares to loyal users is an innovative way to reward their participation and potentially foster brand loyalty. 3) Market conditions: However, the current IPO climate is challenging, with investors wary of unprofitable businesses.
