A little over 13 years ago, I watched in horror from Berlin as image after image of rubble and devastation streamed in from my home town Christchurch. When I came back three years ago, swaths of iconic sites, sites intertwined with childhood memories, were either completely gone or boarded up as was the case with the Old Municipal Chambers building… until last week. This post, this image of the beautifully restored red brick building made my heart so happy.
This is why I love this city, it gives me strength. Blow after blow, after blow after blow, and yet another blow, and yet it perseveres, it keeps building. I think it's this indomitable resilience that generates the deep and grounded energy here, the vibrancy and community, and so many amazing business and community builders (you know who you are ❤️ ). This may sound a bit dramatic, but I actually got a bit teary seeing this post.
The scaffolding is down and for the first time in over a decade the Old Municipal Chambers can be seen in all its red brick glory! The category 1 heritage listed building, completed in 1877, was the first of its type in New Zealand and has undergone an extensive programme of strengthening and restoration work.
