A week from today, I'll be (re)joining Meta as part of Reality Labs and I have to say—I'm excited! Four years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown, I remember wearing my Quest and thinking: If I—or even better, my mom who spent her life raising me and my sister solo and is now less mobile—could put on a headset like this and instantly be in Tokyo or London or Rome, I might never take this thing off. At the time, I thought about how a company could provide VR camera setups to creators and incentivize content creation, and while I still think there's a massive opportunity there, the emergence of generative AI has revealed a new path to creating mixed reality worlds that allow for a truly transportive experience. Meta is in a very, very interesting position vis-à-vis their MR/AI investments on that front and I can't wait to lend my own brainpower to their efforts!
As you know, I think its a terrible shame to have a great mind like yours at work at one of the world's most harmful technology companies. I (sort of) understood your choice 4 years ago. This time around - not so much. Where and how we spend our time our of most important decisions and a lifelong legacy.
Congrats! Can't wait to see what you cook up there. Interesting space.
Congrats Mike!
Congrats on the boomerang, Mike Alwill.
Welcome back! Why did it take you so long? :)
Welcome back Alwill, and welcome to Reality Lab!!
