[International Volunteer Day]   Today is #InternationalVolunteerDay - the perfect opportunity to share some thoughts about volunteering with you.   🤝 For me volunteer work is best when it is #valuable for everyone. Volunteering is not just about giving your time, your empathy, your muscle strength, your knowledge and expertise or lending someone your open ear. I personally got so much back from my volunteer work. I have met the most interesting and inspiring people. I have had so many experiences and wonderful memories I will never forget. And I have learned that actions that seem small to me can bring relevant positive #changes for others - even if it is just for the moment.   🤝 It can feel difficult to find the "perfect" engagement opportunity because there are so many different areas, e.g. environment, children, refugees, elderly people,... But the good thing is, volunteer activities are not necessarily a long term commitment. Try different things, get to know different #NGOs and maybe you will find one organization you want to support in the long term. And if not or you want to volunteer only once, that is also perfectly fine. 🤝 Sometimes we are driven by our own #expectations on what others need for help. Bare in mind to also focus on the #needs of the NGOs and ask them what really helps them the most in the moment. From my experience, sometimes this differs from what I've thought it would be.   In today's world we face many political and social challenges that need to be solved. Finding solutions and shaping the future positively is far too important to simply wait for someone else to do it. So let's take action! What are your thoughts on volunteering? Supporting People’s Futures 🫀 Another of our 4 wonderful #KeepTheBeatAlive films. We have 14,000 people in South Lanarkshire living in poverty, many experiencing in-work poverty. The magnificent Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau feature here, who along with their counterparts in Clydesdale, Rutherglen & Cambuslang, and East Kilbride, are experiencing a huge surge in support requests around food and fuel insecurity advice. It’s 2024, in Scotland, we need to do better at tacking the root causes. Hamilton CAB also do a great job in providing volunteering opportunity as part of an employability journey, including accredited training. On the same theme, 12 years ago, Nicole started off as a volunteer with the fantastic Blantyre Soccer Academy. Today she is a full-time employee, co-ordinating the Para Football Team and supporting the Clubs 600 members alongside formidable Club Chair Jimmy Whelan. What on earth would these hundreds of families in Blantyre’s case, thousands of families across South Lanarkshire more broadly, do without physical activity, sports, leisure, arts, drama and culture opportunities? Essential in supporting people’s futures. Rowan from the superb WISTON LODGE also features, reminding us of the importance of youth work and outdoor education through his Trainee Activity Instructor experience. The third sector in South Lanarkshire need your help. We have 1,420 organisations of all different shapes, sizes and purposes. Many expertly support people’s futures. You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone. To all local, but especially national, policy shapers and decision makers. Please hear our call, take on our 3 big asks; 1️⃣ recognise our value 2️⃣ be smarter with finding, and 3️⃣ meaningfully engage with us So many wonderful humans going above and beyond time after time, making the magic happen in our communities.
