7 years ago, 50 of us from Silicon Valley and Hollywood congregated for a Gold House founding meeting where Steven Yeun joked about how makeup artists didn't know how to make him up, because there were so few Asian American roles. Albert Cheng explained how the data showed that YouTube (where minorities are top influencers) would cannibalize traditional Hollywood, and I met Ray Rehito Hatoyama who shared how Sanrio was accomplishing world domination. Fast forward to this weekend's A100 reunion and then Gold Gala, I caught my breath - how far we've come in 5 short years! We honored (with Albert as a presenter) Hello Kitty and Steve Yeun (Minari, Beef, Invincible), and I bet he has so many makeup artists now. YouTube is dominating. We don't always pause to celebrate/appreciate because we're running so hard to achieve. When Lucy Liu paused ... overwhelmed with emotion as she recounted how difficult it was to be alone and thanked the community for rushing to support, I was flooded. Often too Asian for America and too American for Asia, this community makes me feel powerful. They help me make meaning from where my ancestors come and inspire me to create a new path. Thank you Bing Chen and Jeremy T. for building this house. Thank you Gold House, Dave Lu, and Patrick Lee for galvanizing our community and I'm honored to be a part of it. Hollywood and games are going through rough times. It's part of the normal lifecycle where startups cannibalize entrenched incumbents. Yet, this is the time where Asian-Americans and minorities shine. We start blue ocean companies, where there are no ceilings, through the grit we've inherited from our immigrant roots, our unique relationship with hope, unhealthy need to prove or disprove our disappointed mothers, and courage or naivety - founders like Jensen Huang (NVIDIA), Steve Chen (YouTube), Kevin Lin (Twitch), and Selina Tobaccowala (Evite). Others are at incumbent companies and see where this is headed before others do. They steer the ocean liner through the red ocean like Satya Nadella (I'm so happy that Microsoft is cool again). I've never been more proud to be Asian American. I cannot wait to see what else we do in the next decade.

You’re amazing

Well done!! Exciting journey! Sorry to have missed the A100 reunion and the Gold Gala this weekend. I had a blast in the SF Bay Area the previous week but LA is still too cool for me! :) :) Looking forward to what’s next!

So proud of you and how you’re representing Asian American women in Hollywood! The next five years are going to be even bigger and better. Let’s keep all this amazing momentum going! 👏👏👏
