I have no influence in the structure of college athletics. My job is to help brands leverage fan passion to drive enthusiasm for their products and services. However, I think I know a problem when I see it and an idea that is worth sharing. Steven Eigenbrot (AD at Towson University) wrote a brilliant op-ed for Sports Business Journal that I don't think is getting enough attention. The premise... colleges are NOT built to be the minor league system for professional sports. Baseball may have this one right and before we go much farther, I think more people should give this consideration. #collegeathletics #NIL #problemsolver

Oh, that sneaky Florida alum Chris Rapozo decides to call me out on a Saturday! Wait...does that make me...Gator bait??? 😂 But, he asks a great #higheredmarketing question about smaller institutions creating the kind of brand loyalty that we normally see at large institutions. In addition to Chris's four great tips, I would add: 💡 Stop the *desperate* pursuit of media coverage. I've worked at three small institutions where media coverage was at the top of the brand loyalty priority list. In hindsight...NOPE! The extremely valuable time that your (presumably) small/understaffed comms/marketing team spends chasing media coverage could be better used CREATING valuable, searchable news content for the website, social media, and newsletters. Besides, an internal news strategy gives you more control of your narrative to build brand loyalty. 💡 Speaking of searchable news content, get your comms/marketing team trained on content marketing and SEO. It doesn't sound sexy; but students, alumni and donors LOVE it when their small institution fills the first couple of pages of search results! 💡 Leverage video to capture the vibe of your campus, especially if you can enlist student and faculty influencers. It doesn't have to be "exciting" so much as it has to authentically represent your brand to your audience. 💡 Speaking of which...galvanize YOUR audience. Brand loyalty isn't about popularity so much as it's about the relationship you develop with your faculty and staff (#employerbranding), students and their families, alumni, donors, and surrounding community. A small army of vocal brand ambassadors is more powerful than a population of people who have heard of you but can take or leave your brand. And since I've had the pleasure of hanging out at UF a couple of times, I'll do a Gator Chomp today just for you, Chris. 🐊

Opportunities in going away for college We attended a high school baseball game in Arizona last week. Before the game, we asked a parent about where his son is going next year and if he is going to play baseball in college. Here is the dialogue that took place: "He had some schools in Iowa that wanted him to play, but that’s too far away from home," said the father. We asked, "What if Vanderbilt wanted him? Would he go there to play?" "Of course," he said. We don't need a geography lesson to tell us that Tennessee is farther from Arizona than Iowa is, so what should we make of this? Can we assume that distance wouldn't matter anymore if the school were ranked at a higher level academically? Was the distance a negative factor for him or for his son? Does the son really not love baseball that much? It could be any number of things, but the bottom line is that distance is not what it used to be when it comes to travel and communication. Often times a round trip flight can be very affordable, and it’s always quicker than driving. Parents, we understand that you want to "enjoy the experience" with your son and that your dream would be for him to go to school right down the street so that you can go to every game like you’ve done in high school. The truth is that in pretty much every state in the U.S. that is almost impossible. And besides, it just might be a good thing for your son to learn how to do some things for himself like laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, etc. Players, do not let the "illusion" of being far away from home stop you from playing the sport you love for four more years while getting your education. -Your CBA Team

College football is back, and we are definitely in a transitional moment. Realignment continues to shuffle teams and conferences while TV deals are expiring and shifting (farewell, SEC on CBS).  Exciting News for Football Fan      The Dream Bowl, a game founded with the aim of providing equal opportunities for college football players to showcase their skills and pursue their dreams of playing at the professional level, has gained immense popularity. Led by sports and event planning expert Neil Malvone, this three-day event has been instrumental in giving talented Division III players, and even some lesser-known Division I and Division II players, a chance to shine. It's all about providing a platform for every player, regardless of where they played college ball.     Not only does The Dream Bowl offer exposure to scouts, executives, and coaches, but it also aims to educate players on the various paths they can take to achieve their dreams. While the NFL is the ultimate goal for many, there are other opportunities in the CFL, XFL, UFL, and ELF that players may need to explore. This game serves as a stepping stone to open doors beyond the playing field, including coaching, media, and training roles.        The game has evolved over time, embracing changes in the college football landscape, such as NIL money and the transfer portal. However, Neil Malvone and Reggie Calhoun, who played a crucial role in bringing the game to Texas, still long for the days when loyalty was at the core of the sport. A warm thank you to all the students, faculty, staff and administrators at the Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama for hosting me last week. A special thank you to Keely Latopolski and Stefanie (Pickett) Buckner for organizing the visit so I could make the most of my time in Tuscaloosa. My favorite part was sitting in on classes where 2nd and 1st year students pitched business ideas, shared their perspectives on authentic leadership, and presented their personal and professional brand, informed by #CareerKey #PathAdvisor. While data is important, individual stories make it all come alive. I was so impressed by the students' knowledge, depth of perspective and poise. It gives me hope for the future. I also learned a lot about Culverhouse's holistic wellness program, career services, academic advising programs. Like Career Key's other school and institution partners, there are a lot of people highly invested in individual student success. I’m energized to see such care and intention to constantly evolve teaching and student support in a world where how we communicate and consume content is rapidly changing. We share that desire and it just pushes me to do more. Last but not least, thank you Curt Ward from the University Supply Store course materials. It was great to see you and this visit would not have been possible without your ideas and suggestions. California's Dominance in College Athletics and how it breeds #entrepreneurs My morning coffee walk watching the athletes abound 👇 Will they win the #nil race? Will they win in the #bigten Will Silicon Valley remain the entrepreneurial hub? With over 40 million residents, California is the most populous U.S. state, providing a deep talent pool for college athletics recruitment. #california is home to 32 NCAA Division I schools, the most of any state, including renowned athletic powerhouses like #usc , #ucla , #stanford , and Cal. Over 16,500 student-athletes competed for California Division I schools during the 2021-22 season, the highest number from any state. This represents over 10% of all Division I student-athletes nationwide. Many top professional athletes developed their talents playing college sports in California before turning pro, including Tiger Woods (Stanford), Tom Brady (Michigan), Aaron Rodgers (Cal), and Lisa Leslie (USC). The warm climate enables year-round training and competition. This allows California college athletes in sports like baseball, track and field, swimming, and more to excel nationally. California consistently produces the highest NFL draft pick numbers of any U.S. state. Over the past five NFL drafts, an average of 28 Californian college players get selected each year. The combination of premier sports programs, great weather for year-round training, and a massive pool of athletic talent has made California a dominant force in college athletics year after year.
