Designers / Hiring Managers: How is an associates in design viewed within the product design world? Is that of value? Would love thoughts especially from hiring managers and design teams on associates versus bachelors in design. Any examples of when an associates degree would be enough for a position? What would the pay difference between two candidates with similar experience but one with an associates and one with a bachelors?

Graphic designer | Creating SoMe, websites, videos, photography, and other areas to look pretty | Passionate musician
The other day, I was chatting about job openings with my friends. Since I'm a designer, they asked for my help with the descriptions for these positions. 😊 It was surprising to see how little people know about different designer roles. So, I thought it'd be cool to break them down one by one. ✍ This way, next time you're looking for someone, you'll know exactly who is the right fit! #product #productdesign

This week I delved into the qualities that are crucial when hiring product designers with a leader in the design space. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 💡 Seek designers who are on a steep growth trajectory. Look for individuals who have gone from zero to stellar design skills in a short time. Their enthusiasm and dedication to improving rapidly are key indicators. 💡Don't solely judge applicants by their design portfolio. Instead, focus on their passion for design and their eagerness to learn and adapt. 💡During interviews, probe their opinions on the influence of technology on the design profession. Their insights into how tech intersects with design can reveal their depth of understanding. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: 💡When assessing senior candidates, their work should consistently exhibit a high level of quality. Technical proficiency becomes less of a concern at this stage. 💡Look beyond the 9-5 job. Examine their involvement in the design community. Are they actively participating, sharing knowledge, or mentoring others? Genuine interest in the field is a powerful indicator. 💡Inquire about their views on current design trends and the importance of human-centered design in the industry. Senior leaders should have insightful perspectives to share. Hiring top product designers is tough. Finding individuals who possess the right skills but also demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth and a passion for the field will help to build stronger, more innovative design teams Feel free to share your experiences and tips when hiring in the product design area 🙂

A 'Senior Product Designer' could have: 4 years of experience at one company. 7 years of experience at another company. 10 years of experience at another company. A 'Senior Product Designer' could be paid: £60k base at one company. £90k base at another company. £120k base at another company. The truth is that levels have become pretty irrelevant, especially since the industry has been through a whirlwind and there's a larger fluctuation between levels and salary packages than we've ever seen before. Keep this in mind when your company is using external benchmarking documents to dictate what salaries you're offering. 👉 Is the benchmarking level of seniority the same as yours? 👉 A senior at one company could be at mid-weight at yours or visa versa. 👉 Product Designers - don't be too put off by a title. Explore what the role entails and offers. 👉 If you move from one company to another and are hiring, get to grips quickly with your new company's level of seniority compared to what you're used to. It could save you a lot of wasted time when recruiting.

Product Management Director | 0→1 Creator and 100x Growth Catalyst | 15+ Years Helping SaaS Companies Scale with Strategic Product-Led Growth and Agile Precision
🤝 Had an invigorating chat with a dear friend recently, as we caught up on my job search journey. ✒ He reminded me of Steve Jobs and his calligraphy journey, which remarkably shaped Apple's DNA, influencing fonts and designs, making each product a masterpiece. 🏡 As I traced back my Interior Design roots, I realized how it seamlessly translated into my current decade-long stint in product management. From curating spaces to crafting digital solutions, the essence of marrying functionality with enchantment has remained a constant. 💡 My approach to product management, deeply human-centered, evolved organically. Just like understanding a space's intricate needs, I embraced conversing with customers to shape solutions – a connection that seamlessly segued from interiors to tech. 🌟 Over the past 15 years, I've learned that seemingly unrelated experiences weave together to form our distinctive creative signature. So, here's a question for you: what diverse experiences have played a role in your outstanding products? Let's spark a conversation and inspire each other! #ProductManagement #LeadershipInProduct #InnovationJourney

Suggestion take/edit/toss. When responding to job postings, like Ed's below, unless you have a relationship with the author, it is not recommended to ask them to look at your LI profile and get in touch. Instead, try one of the following responses, or use the basic formula below. "Thanks for sharing this opportunity, Ed, looks interesting! I just applied. Look forward to hearing from Marriott." OR "Thanks for sharing this opportunity, Ed, looks interesting! I just applied. I just helped launched two hospitality brands that increased reservations by 40%. I hope to talk with you or the recruiter." OR "Thanks for sharing this opportunity, Ed, looks interesting! I just applied. I'd be thrilled to work at <company>, and have examples of how I can help. I'm happy to chat, or connect with the recruiter managing the req." OR Ed, the position looks great, I just applied. Sending you a DM* to share some of my work. Thanks for sharing this! *In the DM ask if there's anyone in Recruiting, or if they'd like to talk directly with you. Formula - Thank them for sharing the job. - Advise them that you applied to the job. - Share a recent "result," or offer to share examples of your work that ties to the job. - Ask about the communication process and how it's best to proceed. Or, you can leave this out, ask in a DM, follow up with the company, directly. Good luck! P.S. Please share what's worked for you. You could help other job seekers. #jobseeker #productdesign
