I ran a remote business before remote businesses existed.ย ย I had to.ย When Copy Club started (now Up World & Brand Hackers, I lived in Delhi ๐ฎ๐ณ . But, my members and contacts were in London.ย So, I was remote... by default.ย But back then, before Covid (remember those days?!), this was WILD. I just wouldnโt tell contacts I was in Delhi.ย ย And ONLY when they suggested we went for coffee,ย I'd explain/ And this worked for us.ย ย More than that, remote felt like our secret power. Hope Kelly (our first employee) and me could live and work where we wanted.ย Then COVID hit & the rest is history.ย ย โก โRemoteโ became a thing.ย ย โก We started hiring ad hoc โก I clearly didnโt give a f*ck where anyone was! The team grew and grewโฆย ย โค Lizzie Staiano moved to Barcelonaย ๐ช๐ธ โค Lily Olsberg worked from New Yorkย ๐บ๐ธ โค Pam Macaulay & Lauren Bissett joined us in Scotlandย ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ We were a remote business.ย ย It was great.ย ย And it was all just a wonderful accident.ย When I get asked, โare you ever going to open an office?โ I stumbleโฆย ย Itโd be pretty tricky right now with the team in every corner of the country.ย But we are changing.ย ย Moving from remote to ROAMING.ย Iโll still be adventuring as much as I can,ย ย but Iโll make it back for every coffee that matters. โป๏ธ Repost if you found this useful
RoamingโฆI love that idea! ๐ I know a few people who would enjoy that way of working Lizzie Grilli ๐
Hello from another pre-Covid remote worker! I was hopping between the UK, east and west coast US and the occasional European city too and it worked well! Funnily enough, now remote work has become more of the norm, I've settled in the UK ๐ I love your concept of roaming - the perfect blend in my opinion!
Really like the 'roaming' approach. So nice to still give your people the flexibly to explore the world. Sometimes we stop ourselves from hiring top talent because of the compulsory days in the office
Iโve been thinking about your last post introducing me to ROAMING culture rather than remote and I love it so much. Well done Lottie- I think this will inspire many to think carefully about what their future looks like. For me ROAMING feels so much more inclusive, I love remote working - I thrive on it! But not everyone does and for them being within a remote culture is hard. ROAMING feels far more โmake it what works for you AND what the business needs areโ both those things change frequently, or you could say they roam frequently!
I think I will probably love the idea of roaming. How are you differentiating between romaing and remote?
Where the hell is this amazing waterfall?
LOVE this!! I was remote in 2018 before it was even a thing, and it was a fascinating experience and gave me so much insight and a head start I'd say when everything went remote in 2020! Roaming is a brilliant word as well!
What an incredible photo :) Looks stunning
