Missile Defense Agency, Boeing -led industry team conduct early release intercept test The US Missile Defense Agency and a Boeing-led industry team successfully intercepted an intermediate-range ballistic missile in space during the latest test of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense, or GMD, system. The test validated GMD's Capability Increment 6B configuration, which gives the Missile Defense Operators more time, space, and flexibility to intercept ballistic missile threats to the US homeland. During the test, a GMD interceptor released a kinetic-force Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, or EKV, during the rocket booster's second stage of its normally three-stage sequence of flight. LTAMDS hits targets in live-fire tests 🆕 Raytheon has completed a live-fire engagement using the advanced, 360-degree Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS). The test consisted of a cruise missile surrogate flying a representative threat trajectory. The target was acquired and tracked by LTAMDS, its track data was passed to the Integrated Battle Command System, or IBCS, for launch command, and LTAMDS guided a PAC-3 missile to intercept. Interesting to see the US Navy's approach with the Mobile Defense/Depot Platform (MODEP) concept. If you've seen my previous post on the "Texas Tower" RADAR platforms, you will know that the idea of utilizing converted oil rig platforms for defense is not a new one. The Texas Towers, stationed off the East Coast of the United States, faced significant logistical challenges and culminated in a tragedy which resulted in 28 deaths. You can see my prior post on this event here: https://lnkd.in/gbFsMDRS As the Navy and Gibbs & Cox (Leidos) forge ahead with repurposing surplus oil rigs into mobile missile defense bases, logistical and financial hurdles still seem to be the common counter-arguments. Despite this I have to admit that technology has advanced over the years, and I do think that the concept itself merits additional attention with the new use case. Curious to observe how they tackle any concerns and whether the concept's modern adaptation will overcome the limitations of the past implementation. #Defense #Innovation #TexasTowers

LTG John Costello, #ArmySMDC commander, announces at the AUSA Symposium in El Paso, Texas, a new operation concept for globally integrated missile defense, which incorporates cruise, theater and national missile defense, Dec. 7, 2000. Costello observed that "the line between theater and global missile capabilities will become increasingly blurred as countries begin developing the delivery to reach the United States and to threaten our allies." Noting that these weapons could be launched from platforms operating offshore or in the Western Hemisphere, the cruise and tactical missiles could be direct against the United States and shorter range interceptors would in fact be providing a defense for the nation. Costello added that the theater commanders and the commander in chief of U.S. Space Command use the same satellite constellations to detect missile launches and the same early warning networks to provide the necessary alerts. This commonality should be extended to the interceptors to create "three families of systems completely interoperable with each other." #TBT

Aerojet Rocketdyne, an L3Harris Technologies company, will be the propulsion provider for the Missile Defence Agency's (MDA) Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) as part of the Lockheed Martin team. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Raytheon an $81-million risk reduction contract for the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC).
