I gained a lot of productive insights from this Microsoft and LinkedIn report about the developing use of AI in the workplace. I want to share one set of statistics from the report below and the very relevant perspective extracted from them by The Wharton School Professor Michael Platt about the trade-offs between drudgery and creativity. I know which side of this "balance sheet" I prefer. I also know that the solutions designed for Thomson Reuters legal professional customers will help move the dial from the mundane to the inspired - where we all really want to be in work and life. - 68% of people say they struggle with the pace and volume of work, and 46% feel burned out. - Email overload persists—85% of emails are read in under 15 seconds, and the typical person has to read about 4 emails for every 1 they send. - Meetings and after-hours work are holding steady at their post-pandemic highs, and the workday still skews toward communication: in the Microsoft 365 apps, users spend 60% of their time on emails, chats, and meetings, and only 40% in creation apps like Word and PowerPoint “These findings align perfectly with how our brains manage the trade-offs between routine task execution and innovation—different kinds of thinking supported by two distinct but interacting neural networks in the brain. A former boss of mine was obsessed with AI and wanted us to use AI for almost everything. I disagreed completely, as I still believe AI cannot and will not replace crucial aspects of our jobs. Sensing our teams, innovating, customizing processes to enhance experiences—there's plenty of stuff I still believe AI won't catch up to. Make no mistake, I do use AI, but I'm strategic about it. Nowadays, as a full-time fundraiser and project manager, I find myself using AI tools to systematize information, prioritize processes, or even create new ones, but as my personal assistant. I'll never deliver a grant written by AI, as AI won't understand the importance or the emotions behind our cause. It won't have the full picture of how my team works and what they need to improve processes, nor will it know the exact resources we have to implement projects effectively. But by all means, it allows me to have more time, energy, and focus on the important things in our daily work.
