A few months ago, Local Law 18 went into effect. This short-term rental law limits how companies like Airbnb operate in the NYC and also polices a resident’s ability to rent out their home. Now, three months after Law 18 has gone into effect, the holiday season brings fresh perspectives into sight. As tourists flood the city, data is showing that hotel rooms are getting pricier and significantly harder to come by. This situation, however, is not so cut and dry; the law was put into place to curb the proliferation of short-term rentals in NYC (WIRED reports that at one point in 2022, there were more listings for Air BnB’s than for long-term rental apartments). In light of the dismissal of Airbnb’s lawsuit challenging New York City’s tough new short-term rental law (https://lnkd.in/eTxjmzh9), Airbnb listings for New York City stays are decreasing rapidly ahead of the law’s September 5 enforcement date. With fewer options for NYC visitors, expect nightly hotel prices - and hotel operating revenue - to jump. “Finding an Airbnb in New York City is getting more challenging. That’s because hosts are scrubbing listings to comply with a city-imposed deadline, while the company is moving to prevent future bookings, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday (Aug. 22). Who just banned Airbnb? NYC. "People who want to rent out their apartments or houses in the city must now seek approval from the authorities: The stringent new rules say homes can only be rented for short-term stays if the host also stays there, and they can only have two guests at a time, Engadget reported. Airbnb, which is hit particularly hard, described the Short-Term Rental Registration Law as a “de facto ban” on its business. As of 9/5 there are new regulations in NYC on short-term rentals like Airbnb. Under the new system, rentals shorter than 30 days are only allowed if hosts register with the city. Hosts must commit to being physically present in the home for the duration of the rental and more than two guests at a time are not allowed. How do you think this will impact #nyc #tourismindustry? Well, folks, in the Big Apple, they've cranked up the heat on short-term rentals, and Airbnb's calling it a "de facto ban." New York City dropped the hammer with a host registration law, meaning you can't just rent out your entire pad anymore, and you've gotta be there when your guests show up. Airbnb, VRBO, and the gang are feeling the squeeze. But hey, tourists won't get cuffed for booking a spot, just the hosts could face fines. Airbnb and New York City squared off in court, but that showdown ended with a whimper. Banning Airbnb in New York is absolutely reckless for three reasons. 1) It is a violation of property rights. Property owners have the right to dispose of their property as they see fit. This is a basic American right. 2) It will hit tourism, generating revenue for many New York City businesses. 3) It won't help because the reason for the high rent is not short-term rentals. #realestate #tourism
