Today let us learn about 10 simple things that we can do to protect Earth. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three "R's" to conserve natural resources and landfill space. Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can get involved in protecting your watershed, too. Educate. When you further your own education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources. Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean. Choose sustainable. Learn how to make smart seafood choices. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip the light switch off when you leave the room! Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change. Don't send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office. Bike more. Drive less.

Not a water stewardship strategy I had considered, but I like it! Sitting here at SFO, waiting for my return flight to Palm Springs, and found myself contemplating our water opportunities. Water stewardship is a continual never ending effort and while we have made great strides in recent years, the work isn’t done in spite of California’s seasonal surplus. We must still plan for the future. Watershed health, potable water equity and access, reuse strategies, aquifer recharge, ecosystem health, agricultural uses, and our penchant for use of non native plants and mono cultural landscapes continue to be areas of opportunity. “Water is Life” and it touches everything, from manufacturing and industry to the growth and nourishment of our food supply, everyone is a stakeholder and everyone should be heard. Soon, we will be hearing more and more about Water Wars. Water scarcity is directly tied to migration and social unrest. Water IS a Right and, other than the air we breathe, is fundamental to all Life on Earth, yet we allow corporations to drive our policies. Our watersheds do not stop at county and state lines. The aquifers under California’s Central Valley continue to experience land subsidence from over pumping and poor seasonal supply and that impacts infrastructure, like rail and road. We need to prioritize recharge and, weirdly, fracking technology can help us accelerate recharge of our groundwater supply. Collaboration and a diversity of perspectives is the key. I’d love to see a multi-stakeholder water stewardship group formed from all of our government’s entities: forestry, fisheries, indigenous/interior, agriculture, defense, environmental, energy, commerce, health, trade, and transportation, with the sole purpose of mapping out a holistic water stewardship agenda and policy framework for the country, with regional “boots on the ground” components of those entities interfacing with communities to establish a feedback loop that captures success metrics and identifies areas of opportunity. We can do better and we must do better. But until then, I may be drinking more wine as the sign suggests! Ha! The William J. Worthen Foundation is advancing an update to our award-winning water reuse practice guide, focusing on technical updates, thermal and nutrient recovery, and the workforce development overlay. Contact me directly at [email protected] to contribute to the content creation and/or the project’s funding effort. 🌎💦 #waterstewardship #waterreuse #waterislife
