Greetings, esteemed network. Today's delve into Black History is not just a retrospective glance, but a clarion call to acknowledging pioneering figures and monumental achievements that have shaped our journey towards a more equitable society. Let's get enlightened about the stories that have powered change and shook up the status quo. Our focus on Katherine Johnson—a name perhaps not as familiar to all—should be pronounced when celebrating milestones in space exploration. Johnson's extraordinary mathematical abilities enabled NASA's manned spaceflights, a feat that demonstrated irrevocably that ability transcends race and gender. Let us pivot to acknowledge an institution: Tuskegee University. In the thick of segregation, Tuskegee stood as a fortress of enlightenment, nurturing minds and laying down the academic foundations for countless African American students. The university's establishment was a bold statement—that education and excellence are pinnacles to be reached, regardless of one's background. The echoes of the Civil Rights Movement resonate profoundly with us today, symbolizing a turning point in our shared narrative. The movement's reliance on the principles of non-violence and advocacy stands as an everlasting blueprint for catalyzing progressive social transformation. In wrapping up today’s insight, we realize that these historical vignettes do more than just educate; they motivate us to advance inclusivity and justice in our own circles. As leaders, thinkers, and changemakers, may we continue to draw from the well of history to fuel our commitment to creating spaces where diversity is celebrated, and equality is the norm. The path has been paved by giants; it is our turn to march forward. #BlackHistory #Leadership #DiversityAndInclusion

Executive Director of STEM4Real | Helping education leaders craft anti-racist and justice-centered professional development in science, mathematics, literacy, and leadership |
Today is Juneteenth, a day to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. It is also a day to reflect on the contributions of Black people to STEM. Black people have made significant contributions to STEM throughout history. For example, Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress, and she was also a pioneer in the field of mathematics. George Washington Carver was a scientist who developed hundreds of products from peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans. And Katherine Johnson was a mathematician who worked at NASA and helped to calculate the trajectories for the Apollo 11 mission. These are just a few examples of the many Black people who have made significant contributions to STEM. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate their achievements and to recommit ourselves to creating a more inclusive and equitable STEM field. By celebrating Juneteenth and its importance to STEM, we can help to create a more just and equitable future for all.
