Let us hold space to remember and mourn Nex Benedict, a remarkable Two-Spirit and Non-Binary child of the Choctaw Nation. Let's acknowledge and honor Nex's life by advocating for the protection and rights of Two-Spirit and Non-Binary individuals everywhere. Here are three ways to take action: - Nex's murder could have been avoided if the school staff had done their job and if appropriate policies had been in place. No student should feel unsafe. Contact the Superintendent (Ryan Walters) and School Board officials. According to data from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, a staggering 43% of LGBTI youth aged 15-17 in the EU report experiencing bullying at school because of their sexual identity. This isn't just about hurtful words; it's about the profound impact bullying has on their well-being and education. Just as worrying, 15% of these young individuals consider leaving school due to this relentless harassment. These statistics should serve as a wake-up call for us all. Every child deserves a safe and supportive environment to learn and grow. It's incumbent upon us to create spaces where diversity is celebrated and all children feel valued and respected. Hate crimes more than doubled at elementary and secondary schools from 2018 to 2022, and by that last year, schools had become the third most known common location for hate crimes, according to FBI data released Monday. The steady rise in hate crimes on school grounds comes in the wake of increased violence and behavioral issues noted after the COVID-19 pandemic — and as the U.S. Department of Education has urged schools to address rising hate incidents. Another terrible impact of NC ultra-right politics on children and families. Kudos to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Domestic Violence Advisory Board for layout out the truth. And thank you to Commissioner Laura Meier for her passionate response. I've heard parents say that children shouldn't be "taught" things that might upset or worry them, or that it's parents' responsibility to introduce these topics to them. The problem is that the kids who need to understand what is going on in their own homes and relationships, and how to get help, aren't getting it from their parents- and there is as much domestic violence going on in these Moms for Liberty and other homes with conservative beliefs. Domestic and dating violence knows no political boundaries. Secrecy protects the abusers. The general public has little understanding about domestic violence; how are these parents going to know how/what to talk to their children about? As we commemorate this day, we cannot fail to highlight that #GBV is a gross violation of human #rights and #freedoms. According to the United Nations, 1.3 #billion #survivors of sexual violence exist today in the world. 1 in 3 #women will experience abuse in their lifetime.This makes #GBV one of the most systemic and widespread #human #rights #violations of our time. Call📢 The fight against #GBV continues even after #16days of activism is over. This is how you can continue supporting #women and #girls and #survivors of violence to stay safe and free of violence. 1. Listen to survivors. 2. Share their stories. 3. Talk about consent. 4. Involve #boys and #men on the #GBV conversations. 5. Break the silence on taboo topics such as GBV and #child #marriage. 6. Include people living with disabilities in advocacy, policies, messaging, and conversations. 7. Believe survivors. 8. Make reporting easy. 9.Teach #boys from a young age to #respect #girls and to become men who stand against rape culture and violence against women and girls. 10. Realize no action you take is small enough. 11. Do not hide #GBV cases, #GBV is a crime and crimes should not be hidden. 12. Do not make excuses for perpetrators. Nobody ever asks what ‘he’ was wearing. 13. Do not blame the victim. 14. Think holistically. Involve health actors, policy makers, civil society, and all relevant actors. #GBV is a cross cutting issue to leave no one behind, everyone should be brought on board. 15. Read a lot. Premature sexualization of youth is child abuse. The NEA’s call for sexually explicit content in the schools proves it is bent on a political agenda that threatens our children’s innocence, safety, and morals. NEA prefers degradation over education. Let’s rid our schools of obscenity and indecency and get back to teaching the 3 R’s, decency, and civility.
