Thrilled to share my experience at UNAU MUBS chapter Job fair I attended earlier on today.
Join me as I reflect on the key insights and take-aways from today's key note speaker FCCA Vincent Butambula (Group CFO Abacus Pharma)
1. Know the purpose of your existence.
This involves setting a vision and a mission at a personal level. A vision outlines your aspirational future while a mission articulates how you aim to achieve the vision.
The keynote speaker underscored the fact that the youth have a challenge of setting low goals which when achieved equate to average. He advised us to set high goals.
[Dreams without actions are useless]
2. What graduates lack.
•Optimism: power of positive thinking ( the power of optimism wins everyday)
•Drive: having the hunger to succeed
•Resilience: having the ability to hang in there no matter how challenging a situation at hand may be.
•Focus: Keeping your eyes on the ball regardless of what the crowds are saying.
All the above are skills we should cultivate ourselves. They are not taught.
3. Trust; Professionalism is about trust
As young professionals, we need to cultivate a culture that embodies trust through elements like; integrity, accountability and honesty.
Trust is relevant because beyond competencies most employment decisions lie around trust.
Can the organization trust you?
4. Personal branding
This is more of what is unique about you that others don't have.
As youths, we should conduct an honest self appraisal (SWOT) and determine our core competencies and go ahead to leverage on them to shape our lives into purpose driven lives.
It could be dress code, behavior, character, online habits, achievements etc. What separates you from the masses.
We were cautioned against copying other because many opportunities exist in being different. (Customize your life to fit you.)
5. Understanding the evolving nature of the job market.
At this point we ought to make technology our best friend because in this era, resisting technology is akin to fighting an idea whose time has come.
Knowledge of computer packages for the accounting & finance professionals, the issue of job mobility
Knowing the professional qualifications for each job even after the academic qualifications.
6. Lastly, expectations from fresh graduates
•Coaching and mentorship as a meaning to enhance good grounding into the corporate world
•Practice corporate habits
•Cultivate a culture of excellence in whatever we do
•Show the hunger to learn
•Work with vigor and rigor
•Accept correction and guidance
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude for the knowledge shared by the various speakers and I look for to opportunities of learning and becoming a better professional. Thank you
